making my SUV shine again

I have a 1996 Explorer that i use for work and the exterior has seen better days as far as paint goes. barely any dings or deep scratches, just extremely faded over time and contamination.

i've used clay bar before and i know it worked wonders on my V6 but a friend of mine suggested compounding. not exactly sure what compounding does or how to use it. and also, would i use compound, clay, and wax?

Re: making my SUV shine again

rubbing compound will remove oxidation. then it be will nice and shiny, and stay shiny after you wax it.

Re: making my SUV shine again

it might be oxidation, which is a common issue on red vehicles. Wash it with dawn detergent to clean it off good, then use some oxidation remover really good, then you can do rubbing compound, wash with dawn, then clay bar, wash, then wax/protect~ do a small area to see if it gets results.

I love the oxidation remover from www.dwgint.com but many places has good stuff im sure. If its chalky looking its probably oxidation.

I love the oxidation remover from DWG International™ - Manufacturer of Dri Wash 'n Guard® but many places has good stuff im sure. If its chalky looking its probably oxidation.
yea its a chalky look. and tons of water spots. thats gonna a weekend long process lol but it will be worth it.

i'm assuming the compound is a rub on, rub off process similar to waxing?

Compound does wonders for oxidized paint. The first car I ran a buffer on was a oxidized orange notchback and it came out great.Good luck!

Re: making my SUV shine again

see if you can find a dwgint.com dealer in your area and get the oxidation remover, that stuff is VERY good.

Then after that (elbow grease is the key) wash and rubbing compound with 3m clear coat safe (ONLY!!!!) then wash and look over it see how you like it, may need to get a clay bar in there as well before compound to clean the paint some~ then wax or what not.

Make it a weekend thing lol.... done right if you do all the steps might take 8-16 hours~ some of the black might be faded beyond help so you may want to paint them.

I know you use a waterless wash....do you claybar it and then just use the waterless wash and shine and sealant?
