Clone opinion

What is your opinion of a clone car? I.e. GT/v6-Cobra/Mach 1 clone

Re: Clone opinion

As long as its done right.Dont just slap some cobra fender badges on it. If its a full on clone down to engine, interior ect then its ok in my book.

Yeah....I just can't stand altering the vehicle from how it was....like this guy I know restored a 1967 GT500 and changed the paint color from red to yellow I think....and although it's a real 500 he altered the color on it....I'm just very particular about things like that..........but it's always nice to call somebody out on it...

Re: Clone opinion

I met with a couple of guys in January about starting a local Mustang club... One of them pulled up in what appeared to be a Cobra, not sure of year, and was badged a Cobra, but when you looked close, it was rough, especially inside. He told me he paid $3,000 for it which is about what it appeared to be worth... We started having meetings and cruises and this Cobra would have issues every time, and when a fellow member was helping him try to get this car road worthy, he ran the VIN and the car came back as a V6 auto salvage title... So the guy puts a carbon fiber hood on it, which seemed odd considering it needed a gazillion other things, and then decided it's for sale, and puts it on Craigs List as a Cobra, for $5,000... Up to this point in time I had been nice to him although I had suspected from day one that the car was a "Clobra"(my word)and so I made my stand and told the guy that it was wrong, perhaps even illegal, to knowingly attempt to sell his car as a Cobra...

Did I mention that the guy was the president of our new club? Awkward.....

After some other questionable choices, he was asked to leave the club. He lowered the price on the Clobra, and labeled his car a clone and eventually sold it...

I think that is the lowest you can sink when anyone attempts to sell a base Mustang as a Cobra.

That said, I saw some really clean clones at a car show a few weeks ago... The Mustang had clone Hertz written as the model... The Yenko was in the parking lot and not labeled but they are so rare, it was most probably a clone... I thought they were both nice, but I was a little disappointed that the Hertz Shelby was a clone... But it didn't make me dislike it...

My 05 Mustang GT is kind of a clone, more of a tribute car, to vintage Mach I's and people seem to like it. I wasn't trying to fool people but it did a few times, I would be asked what year of Mach I was it, and I would explain that it was just some stripes my body man and I came up with, inspired by vintage Stangs...

Re: Clone opinion

Check out the link below. This is a prime example of what a clone is IMO and I have all the respect in the world for a clone like this.

Re: Clone opinion

Thanks... The yellow 05 was my dream Mustang, the car I always wanted. I am just a little older than you and I waited all my life for something like the 05 Mustang to arrive, first car I ever ordered, first new car I ever bought. It's the wife's car now so I have chilled on the mods a little; the car still gets more than it's share of attention... I always intended to lower it and supercharge it(like yours), but probably won't since I bought the Roush...

Can't stand them. There is an 2001 or so v6 with dual exhaust and badged With the GT here. Sounds terrible and they were just as proud as can be.

I'm sorry I hate clones, my buddys got one, and it just pisses me off. He's gotta 94 gt cloned to look like a cobra, and when I beat him in a race in my gt, I just say yea I beat that "cobra" lol I think it stupid to just put cobra emblems and body kit, but if it's done right with motor and everything, to me it's alright then.

You know it sounds like people are confusing clones and appearance mods.

To me if it has the same parts, same performance, and it's don e right. Who cares? Besides the people that want to be exclusive.

If I found a Mach 1 that was a perfect clone, same parts, motor, suspension. Hell yeah I'd have bought it and saved some money. However all you see out there is appearance mods making poser cars that have the looks and no performance gains.

Besides wasn't the mustang all about being the car to modify? How many Shelby's, Mach 1, cobras, have all original parts?

I guess it depends on who you are.

Appearance modders= want the look of the faster car, usually don't care about performance

Collectors= need to have that rarest car, and hate imitators

Purists= got to have the car the same way it came off the lot

Etc, etc, etc

Man I'm babbling

I'd say I'm a mix of appearance modding, got to love a car that looks like know other. And performance modding, trying to change the Mach from a drag car, to a rally/autocross car.

I don't really mind clone cars.. But as I've experienced on this site there are some people who feel very strongly against them. Haha.

If it looks good and sounds good, I can dig it.
If a man is proud of his car, all the better for him!

But if they go around making false claims and getting into races and acting stupid.. There we have problems.

Indeed that is irritating when someone claims they have a real cobra when it is only a clone.

I guess that falls under the rule the more stickers I add to my car the more **** I can talk

Re: Clone opinion

i cant stand clones, there is a cloned cobra r here in washington and its poorly done. People who try to clone there car to make it look "cooler" need to understand we all can tell when a v6 is not a v8! lol But then there are clones that are acceptable, 67 fastback for example can be cloned but needs to be done correctly, also since the shelby cobra is a million dollar car, why not create a 427 clone for the lower budge fans of it. There are very few shelbys around theses days in time.

I dont care what you put on your car as long as its not a badge, emblem, sticker saying "COBRA" , "MACH 1" etc when its not. Consider it a "Tribute" but leave off the badges etc

I put an 03 cobra front/hood on my 01 v6 and side mirrors. The side badge was the running pony one and on the back I had a 3.8L emblem to make sure people knew it was a v6.

Re: Clone opinion

there is the issue though Mustangs are to be modded, thats what makes them so popular... if you stop people from customizing their ride you kind of ruin part of what makes the Mustang Great~ its a fine line between making it custom and making it out to be something its not at times.

I completely agree with Kev but Just because I want to run with a cobra r hood and 93 cobra ground effects (which I don't have yet but
Soon will) dosent mean I am trying to be a posser, it's just that I think it looks awesome on my car and it makes it unique to me...I by no means have ever or will ever portray my car to be a cobra and like someone said before"it takes away from the people that are lucky enough to own those rare or semi rare cars" and badging a vehicle shouldn't be wrong IMO because if it's a real mustang enthusiast then he/she should know the difference between a genuine and a clone and for the people that don't...it's just another cool looking car!

This is exactly right. Clone all you want, even put in the drive train...but if the vin runs as a 6 or a gt...then leave the emblems the way they came from the factory. My 93 will be a 93 cobra clone....with the exception of the emblems. It will have LX in all the stock places.
