I heard that automatic transmission fluid flush/exchange could be bad for your car. Is that true?

I have my other 2004 v6 3.9 with about 157,000 miles on it. Should I get the transmission fluid flushed or exchanged or not? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

It's kind of like saying "should I change my engine oil." I dont see how it could possibly be bad to change it. Just do a full flush, not the exchange. And make sure to change the filter.

The reason people say getting a trans flush is bad has to do with regular maintenance. If you have had the tranny serviced at regular intervals (according to factory specs), then getting a flush is no big deal. If you have never serviced it before and fit is high mileage ( above 100k), then flushing and changing the fluid can cause the seals to leak due to the fresh detergents in the new fluid. A lot of places will not even service a high mileage tranny if they don't have verifiable service records indicating regular maintenance for this very reason.

Yea, it make sense.. I don't have the records , that's make me worry if I can still do it or not. But I really wanted to change it.

It's kind of a hit and miss thing. I have personally flushed and changed the fluid on a high mileage tranny before with no problems. I have also seen the opposite happen. You may do it and not have any issues.

A lot of transmissions today are maintenance free. The new 6 speed auto that ford is using is maintenance free. If you are not doing anyhigh stress driving (i.e. towing, racing, lots of hills, etc) then you can probably drive it till the wheels fall off and never have a transmission issue. I had a 93 third with nearly 300k miles on it and never changed the trans fluid or filter. The motor blew but the tranny still worked great.
