Thinking of new car: huge comparison inside

So I'm thinking of a new car... this time next year I will most definitely have one. I'll probably buy it (new or used) around the 08 to 09 switch next year (also so I'll have my feet on the ground a bit after moving to DC). I'm looking for a daily driver car that is decent on gas with a bit of power.

So far I narrowed down my choices to the ones in the attached picture. They aren't in any specific order, but have a wide range of the power to gas efficiency ratio.

Feel free to vote, make recommendations, etc.

Also, some additional research info that you don't have to read...

The Altima, Taurus, and Fusion are pretty much similar in pricing (low to mid 20s). The Taurus is basically the Fusion's looks applied to the 500 (I heard they rebadged the 500 right before a car show). The other 3 are cheaper, but are definitely better on gas.

I kinda have my heart set on the Altima coupe... its a more affordable, better on gas, and recieved higher ratings than some of the more expensive cars I like such as the g35.

I'm also a bit worried that gas prices will skyrocket and I will be stuck with a car with no resale value and monthly payments.

Comments, suggestions, etc are open.

Re: Thinking of new car: huge comparison inside

I say fusion. When I get married, it will be the vehicle I get for a family/dd car. I think they look great, have decent power with the V6, so I have heard, and is just all around a good car.

It has a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 270 hp at 6,000 rpm and 258 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm, 6 speed manual. 60 mph in 6.4 seconds and a quarter-mile in 14.8... not too shabby... its all that im looking for honestly.

Of those cars the Mazda 3. I would go with the turbocharged Mazdaspeed version.

the altima is nice. my roomate is thinking about one.

the hp on it is just way better than the others in your comparison...though it's mpg isn't anything to write home about.

you gotta choose between mpg and power...obviously

Altima. sadly all the others are garbage. IMO Nissan has the most well-rounded lineup of vehicles right now, if i was looking into that type of vehicle, i would check the Nissan dealership first.

When I start working full time and get a more "professional" car, I want one of these badboys: eBay Motors: Cadillac : CTS (item 330191412492 end time Dec-12-07 17:24:13 PST)

You could look at a CTS, the v6's probably get decent MPG.

Re: Thinking of new car: huge comparison inside

the new altimas are VERY nice looking and the v6 is supposed to be pretty nice. as funny as it sounds, as much as i love mustangs and really, really wanted one (but was having difficulty finding a GT without a huge payment when we were looking for a mustang for me), i had previously had a hard time trying to choose between a new altima and a mustang GT. obviously, i went with the GT (no regrets there), but altimas are really nice cars. very affordable too, most come with lots of options. still very sporty, but a great daily driver and better on gas. i wouldn't mind getting one someday with a baby, but right now, my mustang is all i want. i would go altima for sure though!

If you really want to go that route. He could buy a mazda speed 3 for less then a v6 altima and it would out perform the alitma in every aspect. It's faster, cheaper, better mpg, looks better, handles better, its turbocharged. The list goes on and on and you can get all that for under 23k starting. That is also with crappy tires on it stock. I have heard that if you throw some better tires on it, it gets even better. Not to mention it uses a motor that has been around for atleast 3-4 decades. Where as the motor in the altima has only been around for a few years.

To me I think the mazda3 is the best bang for your buck out of all the choices. Even with just the 2.0L in it. It still has plenty of pep to get you around and gets close to 30mpg in city and upwards to 40 on the hwy and the motor puts out 148hp. To me the mazda3 is the poor mans bmw. The only thing that would make that car better is if it was RWD. Even though its not, it is still a bad *** little car.

I voted mazda3. One of my buddies in college had one and the interior was extremely nice and looked kinda retro-ish. I loved the look of the interior. It had very nice pick-up. It had plenty of room in it and was great on gas.

Yeah, check out this site: D3 Research And Design Website / Performance Parts For Your Cadillac Cars - XLR / CTS / STS / ESCALADE

The CTS series is a pretty sick looking caddy.

If he bumped up to the mazda speed3 he would have close to the same power. 263hp is what its rated at, but it's still faster and weighs less. It gets decent gas mileage for a turbo'd car. It is also fairly easy and not really expensive to get it upwards of 300hp. Plus I bet there is a hell of a lot more fun factor in it lol. It also starts at under 23k where as the altima coupe is around 25k starting with the v6. So for the same starting price he could get a spd3 with a few more options.

Here is a little comparison in looks outside and in of both cars.

Exterior:
Altima: To me its not to bad looking, but doesn't really jump out at me.

Mazda Speed3: This car screams fun to me with plenty of style. Still classy, but sporty looking.

Interior:
Altima: Again, not bad looking. However kind of bland to me for the price tag it comes with.

Mazda speed 3: To me the interior of the 3 looks like it should be in a BMW. Its very classy and sporty just like the exterior. It just seems like mazda put more time and effort into the car.

I feel like out of the two cars. The altima just didn't get as much attention to detail and lacks in a lot of ways that the mazda doesn't. Again I think the mazda is the overall better bang for your buck. You get so much more for less. Even if it was a regular 3 and not the spd3 for less the 25k you could have a optioned out car.

I'd love to pimp a CTS-V as a daily driver. That would be awesome in an unbelieveable way.

Right....I think you should get your eye's checked. I'm more of a fan of the sedan version anyway, but they don't have the spd3 version in it which blows.

This is more my style.

Re: Thinking of new car: huge comparison inside

i narrowed it down to the altima, fusion, and mazda 3...

ford fusion:
I4- 20/29 160HP
V6- 18/26 221HP

nissan altima:
2.5- 23/32 175HP
3.5- 19/27 270HP

mazda3:
i- 24/32 148HP
s- 22/29 156HP

although i like them all, there is something i dont like about every single one of them... the altima is expensive, the fusion has relatively bad gas mileage, and the mazda3 doesn't provide enough power for me (and the looks are just okay for me).

guess i'll have to test drive em to get a better feel.

I think you will be surprised with the overall performance of the mazda3. The hp numbers may not be the highest of the 3, but its a quick little car. Also they under estimate the 2.0L mpg. My friend has one with a 5spd manual and gets around 27 city and up in the high 30's on the hwy.

Another thing I was going to say. If you decide on the fusion. Might want to consider the mercury version. It's a bit nice, but doesn't cost much more. I think if I was considering a fusion that I would hit up mercury first.

Re: Thinking of new car: huge comparison inside

yeah I was lookin at the milan and the honda accord coupe as well (pic attached)...

its one of those things that i will probably test drive them all... if the altima really impresses me i will spend the money for it... otherwise i'll test drive them all. the fusion would really have to drive like a dream since its pretty bad on gas (and i might have to commute 30min-1hr daily). hell, i might even test drive a Z or G35 if i can find one under the 30k mark. if none really impresses me, i will probably end up getting the mazda3. its quick, cheap, and good on gas.
