Ok guys.my brother inlaws 98 Mazda 626.I was hoping u guys may some experience with this engine.it is a 2.0 which is the identical motor that is in the probe.I was wondering if this code can be caused by really bad exhaust leak.I think it can but I'm not sure.he brung it over cause the exhaust is partially ripped off and has the code.any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like it could from what I read about it here - DIAGNOSTIC TIPS FOR P0171 OR P0174 LEAN TROUBLE CODES


Anytime there is a leak before the O2 sensors it can cause them to send false readings to the ECU, so I would guess the exhaust damage has probably caused this to happen.

ive repaired the exhaust before.it was actually 2 years ago.they told me they will be selling it soon and just wanted to get it through smog.so it was somewhat rigged.anyways if its the same spot it is past the o2 sensors.there is a great muffler shop that is really affordable right in our area.thats usually were i send people.but do to there lack of funds i have to rig it again.
