2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1: Revealed, Officially!

Quote:

This is it. The speculation, rumors and half-truths can now be set aside -- this is the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, officially revealed for all the world to see. Powered by a supercharged LS9 6.2L small-block engine, the ZR1 hasn't even received an official horsepower number from the engineers toiling away at the General. All Harlan Charles, project manager for the Corvette team was able to tell us last week was the new high-powered 'Vette engine is "capable of producing at least 100 horsepower per liter. That's at least 620 horsepower, and approximately 595 lb.-ft. of torque." Chevrolet wasn't even able to give us a time on the 0-60. Charles was only willing to say "it's in the low three seconds." The small-block engine under the hood is only able to hit those massive numbers due to the addition of the positive-displacement Roots-type supercharger with a new, four-lobe rotor design plus an integrated charge cooling system that reduces inlet air temperature for increased performance. That's the "go" end, but the "whoa" end is just as impressive. The ZR1 gets some simply huge carbon-ceramic, drilled disc brake rotors. They're so big and are required to be so powerful they're using the same 15-inch-diameter discs found on the front of a Ferrari 599. Except on the ZR1, they go on the 20" tires in the rear. In the front, they'll be getting even larger 15.5-inch-diameter rotors. Yup, they're simply breathtaking to see up-close. For the time being everyone else will have to check out the gallery below or the full press release after the jump. In case anyone's wondering -- the magazine and website all about the Trend in Motors are the sleazy bunch of d-bags who broke the embargo seven hours early. We just followed suit. We'll have more time to talk about that later -- now go and read the press release and look at the pretty pictures.

Is it just me or does it look like it has a solar panel in the hood?

It's got a lexan window on the hood. It's the only thing I don't like about the car. It just screams "2f2f". To quote one of my buddies on another site, "it's gayer than two dudes touching pickles."

Nice....yeah, that must be to show off the supercharger that you can't see because of the cover.

I based my 100K guess b/c the MSRP on a Cadillac XLR-V is 100K and it boast the 4.6L version of that engine

I don't think they're F'ing around with this car. It might weigh a smidge more than the ZO6, but I doubt it'll be by much, and I still wouldn't doubt it if it weights less (hard to beleive, but a 3100lb ZO6 is hard to believe as well)

you have a very very valid point but on the other hand there are people who can only afford the z06 but also aspire to a zr-1

This car is meant to be a track whore, not a Driver that can also hit the track like a ZO6. I don't see it replacing it, and I figure the pricetag will be around 125,000, about 50,000 more than a ZO6. Not even remotely in the same price range.

This cars already got a ton of buzz, and they're proving that their "outdated" LS Engines can still rip apart Ferrari's at a fraction of the cost.

Not sure how that makes it a "dumb" move on GM's part2:

The Ford GT would have done the same thing, but the problem was that the ZO6 was about 50,000 Dollars less, and had similar performance for that price. I love the GT, but it seems like Ford is not the Smartest out there when it comes to the Supercar Killer market.

Re: 2009 Corvette ZR1

I wasn't saying GM was dumb in the car building department, they are some of the best.
I think they suck in marketing at least in the past. like killing the camaro.they did a 180 with the vette and the Z06 is a HUGE jump up for the price. if the ZR1 doesn't replace the Z06, my guess it's gonna be a low production car.

it's got less hp than the Z06 but with the bigger brakes and better susp. it will get around the track faster than Z06. GM is one of them that you never know where their head is.

the ZR1 is a low production vehicle. its the GT500KR version of the GT500. its the upper level version of the upper trim level vehicle. the ZO6 will always be there because not everyone can afford a 120k$ car (last i heard the msrp was going to be around 120k), hell not everyone can get a ZO6 as it is and most settle on the base vette.

i dont know what you mean by this. the ZR1 has an estimated 620hp (they arent even done tuning it yet!) as compared to the standard ZO6's 500hp. so umm, thats at least 120hp the ZR1 has on top of the ZO6. and we all know how well factory supercharged cars respond to boltons, the ZR1 is going to be ****ing insane. a pulley/tune/boltons will probably put it at or around 700hp, just a bit more than 600 to the wheels. theyre doing with a stock blower and boltons what most KB/Whipple Cobra guys are doing. Imagine a ZR1 with a 3.4L Whipple.......

ultimately for Cobra or GT500 owners, if you dont have a KB/Whipple or Turbo or any combination of them with Nitrous, just give up, you arent going to hang if you are running anything less than 640 to the wheels (the Vette has a aerodynamic advantage over us, and a better powerband to boot).

I think what Thomas said covers it. Not sure where you heard that a LS9 with a supercharger puts down less than an LS7...

Also, it is going to have limited numbers. Much more limited than the ZO6, not sure on the exact amount though.

Right. It's not a Z06 replacement, it's just another, extremely limited, model.
