Why wont Mercury revive the cougar?

it makes perfect sense and mercury has no unique cars whatsoever. It could be easily based off the mustang.Just excessiviely modified and luxofied. Whats mercury got to lose?

What you're stating as "easily based" is not really that simple. True, it's not as difficult, time consuming, nor as expensive as creating a new car but it still involves designing and making new parts to give the Mercury version it's own character and feel. In the end, it would really just cannibalize sales from the Mustang anyway and complicate the Ford line-up of vehicles. That's something Ford cannot afford to do at this time.

Why wont Mercury revive the cougar?

which cougar does mercury revive? the one based on the mustang? the one based on the thunderbird? or the one based on the mazda miata? the reality is that the cougar was never really a good selling vehicle for mercury. i agree that a sporty model cougar based off the mustang would be a fun car, but it would take away from mustang sales, and at this point in time ford doesnt have the money needed to certify a new car model that has limited sales potential.

A lot of money. In today's economic situation the car makers are downsizing their lines, no need to compete with themselves. It does cost considerably more to produce 2 very similar models of the same car. So far Ford is the only company without their hand out for taxpayer money. I would not be surprised to see further reduction in models.

Non sporty mid to full size 2 doors just are not big sellers. Is there even a 2 door Lincoln like the Continental anymore?
