2012 and 2016 mpg requirements??

I just read the article on yahoo about how by 2016 cars are required 39 mpg and trucks 30, which to me seems rediculous. Being a muscle car enthusiast I am going to be sad to see the new muscle car remakes like the Mustang, Challenger, and not even born yet Camaro go. Does the law mean that these cars will have to go after 2012 or can they continue to make them and have to pay a fine for not getting the mileage?, or can they still be sold, but not as passenger cars but as specialty cars. Also what is going to happen to dealers like Ferrari and Lamborghini who only make performance cars.

As far as I know, it only applies to American-made cars.

I think it will fail miserably and be the next DTV transition... That is, pushed back numerous times until it's actually practical.

What is going to happen to Ferrari and Lamborghini is they will just stop selling cars in the U.S. They aren't going to stop making them, or change what they make. To me the real thing should the cars with this great mileage SHOULD be available, and SHOULD be cheaper. There SHOULD be an extra charge if you want a muscle car, pay a premium price and you pay more for filling up more often. Then people who really want them and keep getting them. No reason they shouldn't be made.

The cars will still be available but they will be hit with a higher gas guzzler tax....muscle cars here to stay.
