Are today's economy cars faster than yesterday's muscle cars? Why?

What accounts for this? If you took a modern 4 door grocery getter back in time you would be the king of the drag strip.
2011 Honda Accord EX 0-60 mph 6.1 Quarter Mile 14.6

1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS 0-60 mph 7.9 Quarter mile 15.2
1974 Chevrolet Chevelle 0-60 mph 11.4 Quarter mile 17.8
1973 Corvette (350ci) L82 0-60 mph 6.6 Quarter mile 14.9
1970 Dodge Challenger T/A 0-60 mph 7.0 Quarter mile 15.2
1966 Ford Mustang (V8, Auto) 0-60 mph 10.8 Quarter mile 17.7

look at the difference in the size of the vehicles that you are comparing. the honda is a serious lightweight in that group. mine weighed in at less than 2700 lbs. you did not mention a few of hte greats and you did not give any power ratings. a 1968 GTO with an ho 400 from the factory with 366 horses and will do 80 mph in first gear.

Maybe electronic advances? Active suspension and better engine wiring, also a 350 and anything around there, possibly higher like the legendary 426 hemi, would be heavy as heck so an old suspension would hav 2 do more work, there's a lot more reasons but I'm on my iPod but u can research electronic advances in automotives!
