Selling my car cash how should i go about it?

My buddy has sold a few cars on Craigslist, I'm selling my 2001 Mustang GT for $9500, cash only. My friend says the buyer usually counts the money to him, hands him the envelope, then he signs the title over. Maybe I'm being paranoid but is this how people usually go about it? Or should i check each bill for counterfeit?

Yeah, don't worry about the bills. Be concerned more about if the transaction is proper and complete. If you are worried about counterfeiting, you could ask the buyer to give you are bank/cashiers check. It would be another added step for the buyer, but it is every much a legitimate request. Trust you own judgement... if you can trust the buyer, you can trust his cash. And with most any business transaction... if you can have a third party there, in a friend or family member, that tends to keep everyone more honest. Good luck.

Marsha: Mines not stock and only has 27,000 miles, but thanks dear!

Gary: The state I live in doesn't require a notary, but your input has not gone unnoticed and thanks mate!

You're supposed to go to DMV or when transferring title has to be signed and notarized for sale to be legal. Seen too many cases of seller cheated out of car and money and sometimes their life. So do at a public place have backup and if possible at your bank that can notarize and check cash. Best safe than sorry.

Meet with a person you know and trust and have them count the money also before you sign over your title. Since your friend has good experience you should have him help you with that. A 2001 mustang GT in excellent shape is only valued at 5,867.00 unless it's the convertible which is 7,170.00. (private party)
