So i live in california and its the end of the month and i just got my first Window tint and dark taillight ticket:/

so I asked the officer nicely how do you judge weather a window tint is illegal or not (because my tint is not that dark and my windows were down)
he said that's easy any tint is illegal. I said really? Isn't there a certain percentage considered legal and arent the rear window okay to be tinted?
He responded yeah its no %... then he said the law says any tint on any windows that is not from the factory or any dirt obstructing views is illegal...

Don't comment how I should respect police and they are just doing there job because I'm not trying to bash on the cop he wasn't mean or anything I'm just questioning Is this true??? Is that really what the law states or was he trying to make his quota?? Cali people?

I don't live in California. I had the same problem here in PA. But the officer here just gave me a warning. But he didn't put meter on it or anything. I just went to DMV website and printed a copy of the law to keep in my glovebox. I need to get an officer to meter mine so I know how dark it is. I know ours is different than yours

CHP-Frequently Asked Questions of the Highway Patrol

Can I put after-market tinting on the windows of my vehicle?
The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:

1.The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.

2.If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.

The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions.

However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced.

I checked the laws. Everybody believes you can't but as long as it lets 70% or more light in then you can. Granted it is almost nothing, you can have front window tint though.... I live in Cali as well. As we've seen from this cop, not everyone knows the specific tint laws.

Video | California Window Tint Laws

Hey Mustang Evolution,

I am the webmater for Acme Window Tinting in San Diego. We've seen a lot of mis-information online about California window tinting laws, so we made a short video to give our customers the facts. Click the link below to see our video

If you think video is helpful please share with your friends. How about a "sticky" webmaster?
