Were to run a vin?

Hey guys so me and a couple friends are pitching in to buy a miata as an auto cross car. We stumbled upon one in running condition and good body. He doesn't have the pink slip, he said he can only write the bill of sale. A couple red flags that popped up was the low price of it and the no pink slip. I wanna run the vin to see if its stolen, I called chp and they said they can't provide that info to the public only to police. Thanks

If you have a smart phone, there are free apps that will give you basic information if you input the VIN. I think NADA has one, and there are a few others.

No problem. I think I had one called "VIN checker." They will at least tell you if the title is clean, and if the car has had any accidents. It isn't quite a carfax, but it's free.

Try going to your local city p.d. Explain to the desk officer you don't need to know who owned it before, just if it is stolen. They could let you know whether it is stolen and if so, give them the address where they can tow it from.

People on here also suggested nicb.org

It tells you if it's been reported stolen and if its ever been filed as totaled
