Off topic, what to look for with a 2001 Lincoln Continental

Our daily driver Volvo wagon threw a timing belt and bent some valves. May not be worth repairing it's a 98 with 120K miles. So I looked in the merchandiser paper and saw an older couple selling their 2001 Lincoln Continental. It's an automatic, power everything, sunroof, 70K miles, $4750 obo. I'm going to look at it tomorrow. It has a 4.6 modular engine. Any pointers on what to look for? Seems like a decent price for a real cruiser. Most old couples really take care of their cars. They are selling it because they are moving, probably into an assisted living village. TIA, Dave

Not quite the same engine. This is actually a 4.6 INtech, which is a 4 valve engine. It's should be exactly the one that was first equipped in the mark VIII in 93. It has 275 horses, so this car will move a lot faster than a town car. Watch for egr problem if you live in a high wind area or a place near sand. It has air suspension in the rear, a lot like the town car. So you'll hear the compressor now and again. Don't worry to much, but pay attention if it's coming on too often or sounding weird. Some people complained that it was caused. Weird vibration. Sometimes the compressors mount can become somewhat fault. Fairly easy to fix and most people just fab some foam and insulation to reduce noise. Also if it eventually has a leak, the suspension will sag. It can be costly to fix so if you have it inspected, make sure you know the status of the compressor and air lines .

Won't be buying it. Went to look at it, never even test drove it. Exterior had cracked front & rear bumpers, a big dent in the trunk lid. Was filled with junk, wrappers, cigarette butts, and reeked of smoke from outside the car. I doubt they took care of it. I would pay $2500 at best.
