Stay away from the lt1. Optispark is the devil.

Now if you wanted to get all into it you could swap the lt1 out for a 5.3l truck block, put ls6 heads on it, lsx intake and probably make 400whp.

I would personally test drive both and see which one you like better.

LT1's are actually great engines.

I have personally witnessed a 94 T/A, 6spd with 225,000 miles on the stock engine, transmission and rear end run 13.3s @ 108 mph with only full exhaust, CAI, tune and decent tires (not DR).

Can't say the same about any fox body, ever with just those mods.

I don't know where people are saying the Fbodys handle like boats and the Foxes handle better.

I personally think the Fbodys have quicker turn in, but at the limit, the rear end wants to come around. The Foxes I think have slower turn in but seem more stable, especially at the limit.

From a performance standpoint, the Firebird has the Fox beat in every category. It's faster, handles the same or better, brakes better and likely will get better fuel mileage.

Also, with about a thousand dollars in new parts, they can be pretty quick. If I remember, I think my buddies old Z28 gained about 40whp from just a CAI, full exhaust, under drive pulley and a tune. I want to say it put down around 300rwhp and 330+rwtq. I remember the graph, it was like a slightly curved straight line, it had power everywhere. That was a fun car and it's what really got me into fast cars instead of big trucks.

Don't be hating on lt1 lol mine ran like a son of buck, they are very under estimated motors.

When I first bought my 95 T/A ragtop I took it to the dragstrip and ran 14.60s stock. Then I added the following mods:

SLP cold air intake
LT4 knock module
Throttle body air foil
Full Magnaflow 3" stainless exhaust, Y-pipe, high flow cat, exhaust pipe, single muffler, 4" tips.
(Car still has stock exhaust manifolds)
Mail tune from PCMForless.

After that, the car runs 13.60s on street tires.

Not underestimated by me...

Those engines have been the mainstay of hot roddiing for the last 60 years.

Everyone else is crazy or haven't had both. I have had both and they were all in very good condition. The Camaro was just a huge difference in performance. That's completely stock for both cars. The 3rd gen Camaros handled awesome and the 4th gen even better.

I have no complaints on the handling of my '79 or '95 T/As.

See I actually owned this exact bird I'm looking at but I didn't own long enough before to really get a feel for it. I know it ran great. The motor was a brand new lt1 crate with the corvette aluminum heads. But the trans went out after having it a few weeks. And I had a 90 lx carbureted fox and loved it before also.

And one thing I don't like about the firebird is it being an automatic. I'm a 5 speed guy. I do like the fox a lot more when it comes to looks, and I love the more simple interior over the more modern bird. But I also know that the bird has the fox beat in basically all performance aspects.

I really love the looks of the fox bodies. I have always liked them and they are fun cars. I think they are about the best drag cars made. I think I would actually go with the fox if I were to buy one to mod. Just because of looks alone and how fun they are to throw around.

I will second the pita that optispark is. My brother owns a '97 lt1 that he's done quite a bit of work to (spray, stroked to 396, etc.) and pretty much the only issue he's ever had was that damn optispark.
