First Car

Hello, I need your help Mustang Evolution! I'm 15, and I'm going to work to get my first car this summer. I found a 1996 Ford Mustang GT that I want to buy. I was wondering, what would be some first good mods for power? I know a kid who has a turbo Eclipse that's pushing around 350 FWHP and I sorta want to beat him at the local track lol, so what is some good mods? I already plan on a PI swap, stage 2 comp cams, and then some flowmaster 40 series with off road x pipe. Any other suggestions? Thanks guys!

Hi there 5.0orGTFO. I have your car LOL.. I did the PI Swap, BAMA chip, X-pype, 4.10's and I inspected every thing to make sure theres no leaks. Runs amazing. I'd guess I could run 13.5's. What is your buddy runnin in the 1/4?

Hey there Mosified, our local track is a 1/8th, and he runs a 11 or 12 back in the summer, with smaller injectors and a different tune and turbo, he hasn't run it since though.

Well my mods cost under $2500 new. Cams on the SOHC are gonna run you an extra $700. My opinion, put assembled FRPP pi heads with a 70-75mm TB. Long tube headers if you want. I kept my stock headers for the sake of ease.. Lol. If you only want to race occassionally and you camt afford a supercharger.. Nitrous is the way to go. With the proper set up, you should be in low 12's.

Okay, cool. I was also thinking about getting a small after school job and saving up a little each paycheck and doing a procharger... Thoughts on what kind?

I never had a supercharger. I have 10.5-1 compression too. Im pretty sure you want to keep the compression down to 9.0-1. Be careful about a pi swap. Or just swap in a complete 2001+ 4.6L. Get a 4V if you can do that. Its just $$$$..

And you want 3.55's-3.73's in the rear for FI too.

Haha. A 4V is a 4.6 DOHC or is it a coyote motor???

---------- Post added at 09:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:31 AM ----------

I was sorta thinking 4.10s but then again probably not till it's a forced induction vehicle...

Nitrous is insane. Pushing that button is like Warp 5!! My set up is perfect for a 100 shot of N2o the way its modded right now. Nitrous is a monster off the line. SuperChargers kick but in the powerband.

Yeah I was thinking nitrous as well but IDK... Haha. I want a manual but I know a auto would be better for boosted motors

Its a preference. IDK What you're spending on a procharger but you're up to 7000-8000 $$$ for parts alone. For $3000 you can still win the race with the nitrous. Different year 4.6's are good or bad for FI. You have to have the bottom end to hold up..

If you want more info on Procharger specs, post a new thread titled "I want to Supercharge my 96GT" Someone that already did that may jump in and hook you up with all the details and then some.

As for the 1/8 mile. You'll totally walk your buddy with a full PI Swap, exhaust, CAI, 70mm TB, BAMA Tune and what's really gonna polish him off are the 4.10's. You won't even need nitrous or a Pro Charger. (I thought about it all day)

Make sure 6 cats on the exhaust are removed and replaced with an Xpipe. The PI swap with the BAMA tune (you're gonna need it) is absolutely fine with any gears. You"ll have a BEAST like mine.. A sleeping beast* zzZZZ*zzZZZ*

What are the mods on your buddies Eclipse? Is it AWD or FWD? Is it 350bhp or 350whp? A bolt-on, PI swapped, and cammed 4.6 should hit the 290-300whp mark. Manuals won't launch as good as a stalled auto. I wouldn't do a Bama tune on a cammed car, and I'm fairly certain they won't tune for cams. Elevation will play a factor in your times you run as well.

Remember he's running 1/8 mile. I was thinking if it were 1/4 mile he should be worried more.
What do you think JDF?

I'm no expert on drag racing, but a 350hp Eclipse is not gonna be an easy car to beat. I had a biddy at 347awhp on his Evo 8 and I didn't even stand a chance from a dig or a roll. Unfortunately these cars are quite anemic and take a lot to make fast.

I ran nitrous with 3.90's and I roasted turbo's and SC's 1/8 mile but lost in the 1/4.

Well traction will suck for him, but those cars definitely aren't easy to take down. Maybe look into a foxbody for some better bang for your buck?

I learned the difference between 1/8 mile and quarter mile a little late in life. Learning to drive takes lots of practice. Safety first. When in doubt, stop. Doesnt matter how fast the car is without an experienced driver behind the wheel

Accidents only happen due to impatience, passing, road conditions or mechanical failure. I was a 1/4 mile away from some lady pulled onto the right shouler just sitting there. Speed limit 45, double yellow lines. She banged a left and clipped my brothers 69 Torino 351-GT. It was my fault because of No Passing Zone o_O ughh.... Live and learn.. She was going thru her pocket book before making her L. She's so lucky I didn't T-bone her :-[ And nobody believed my story of what really happened. She didn't file a claim because she knew. I got a ticket (no passing) and my brothers car wasn't worth the repairs. And we'll never find that car again for under $25,000..

A car like that should run mid to high 12's @ 110+MPH in the 1/4 and around a 9.2 @ 88+MPH in the 1/8.

A stock 2G FWD will easily pull a mid - low 10 @ 75+MPH in the 1/8 and a high - mid 14 @ 95+MPH in the 1/4.

Since he replaced the injectors and went with a bigger turbo (likely an EVO3 16G or HX35) you will have to dump a ton of money into a 96 GT to run with that DSM. Any 2v without nitrous or boost will get raped by a little 2.0L 4G63 with a decent sized turbo. That's just how it is.

I would suggest looking at a different platform to build a car from, unless you plan on a 4v engine swap.

Fast and 2v just doesn't add up without a lot of money and boost.
