Help Purchasing a Fox

So I'm in need of some help from the ME fox body guys.

I recently scored a job in which I make a substantial amount of cash compared to my last job. Not an extravagant amount, But just enough to where i can see myself purchasing a Fox.

Now, This car will not be for me. This car will be for my Dad. He's put up with all my bullcrap as a teen, all through highschool, and Saw me straight through college. I quit my job in order to finish up my final semester of college, and he supported me both morally and financially for the last 4 months. So I figure This is the least I can do to repay him.

What are some things that I absolutely must check for, when buying a Fox? i'm not looking for a Show car. But mostly a project for him to work on over winter. He's been a mechanic his entire life, so He can worry about any engine Mods he'd like to do after I get it for him. I'll be looking for a car with little to no body rust, A solid engine and trans, and a decent interior. After prying into his likes/dislikes, He's stated before that he's more fond of a mid/late 80's body style. My price range is between 4 and 5k.

A couple questions.
1) Which is a more reliable Trans. The Auto, or manual? I suspect he'll probably beat on the car a little bit when he takes it out.
2) How strong are the internals/Block? I found a clean fox with a vortec supercharger, heads and cams, and I'm wondering how well it will hold up.

So I guess that's about all I'm curious about right now. If anyone is able to help see me through this purchase, i'd appreciate it. Here are a couple that have caught my eye.
