The fill cap gives those away.

I'm also a bit of a diesel guy. Current work fleet I take care of is 94.5/97/99/00/01/01/02/03/05/06/07/13.

Not many people know about that though. The turbo-less motor is what confuses most people.
Most people only know 7.3,6.0,6.4.6.7 from ford. And not the 6.9 turbo-less

This reminds me of my first car - a 1987 Ford Escort with a 2.0 diesel, 5 speed manual. The truck drivers used to look at me like I was nuts, pulling up to the diesel pumps and filling up. They'd be like "Son, you're at the wrong pump!" Most would want me to pop the hood open because they didn't believe me when I told them it was a diesel. Got about 45-50 mpg with that little beast - was perfect for a poor high school kid!

Let's see

So it's a 6.9. I didn't know about that one. My brother has the N/A 7.3 international in his 88 F-250. That would've been my guess. Then again I'm not a truck person so...

Those 6.9's were hard on injector pumps, easy to repair or replace. With right wrenchs about one hour. A ***** to bleed if ever ran tank dry. Advance the pump timing 5 degrees and would pull stumps.loved those old 6.9's

They were based on the Oldsmobile 350R engines, and designed to run down the same assembly line as the gas engines, but only the top-end of the two engines is interchangeable.
The diesel engines had a forged rotating assembly and the blocks were beefier than the gasoline versions. There is no provision for a distributor, or a mechanical fuel pump, on the diesel block.
Some racers used to convert the diesel engines to gas, in the 80's, due to there additional strength.

The 5.7 diesel had a horrible reputation for reliability but it was largely caused by operator error, low quality diesel fuel, and the technicians at the dealerships had zero experience working on diesel engines. All of that tainted GM's reputation for small diesel technology, in their pickup trucks and cars, to the point where that International 6.9, that Rap was working on, seemed like an awesome engine when it was introduced in the early eighties. Haha
