Cobra R hood drainage pan (custom build)

So, a problem with cutting the louvers out is now the motor is accessible to rain and ****... so I am fixing it. I'm designing a custom drainage pan that'll still be open to allow heat extraction to occur and yet guide rain to drainage spouts so the motor remains free of water in the coils.

This pan isn't "pretty", but it should be quite functional. Plus, it'll be low enough to allow a blower to fit under it. What is important is the mounting tabs. I'm planning on making strips that I can fiberglass resin bond to the hood with studded bolts (low profile heads), so that the pan is removable. The drainage spouts are also removable, and the tubing is clear so I can see if crap gets in the lines. I also will need to design a strap type system to guide the drainage tubes where I want the water to exit, but before I put this into aluminum sheet metal, I wanted feedback.

I'm debated adding a very small V in the middle to help guide water to the corners.

I personally would rather just close the vents than have something like that under there, that is if the underside of the hood is finished and smooth and painted

it isn't. How do you plan to "close the vents"? The underside is bare fiberglass, and unpainted.

I thought they were not functional from the factory? so you wouldnt have to do anything, since the underside is not finished it wont really matter what you do then I guess

well...
ok, so just cut and formed, not "done" yet. I just wanted to make sure it fits and what not. Open to feedback.

They aren't functional from the factory. I made it functional. But by doing so, I created issues. This is to fix those issues.

it's worth noting I did that with needle nose pliers. Once I get some real life testing done on it... I'll work on making a nice looking one.

If I'm picturing it correctly I'm not sure those drain holes seem big enough for heavy rains, if you have that often.

the drainage spouts are at the front, and I'm planning on routing the drainage hoses up by the radiator

well if you look at the test I did, I started the beaker off slowly, and then dump about half of it literally. I also went ahead and just flat out dumped a beaker in there and one drop came over the top. If we're getting more rain than that, I would need a snorkel kit

Not bad at all. Now you just need to get it painted. Along with the rest of underside of the hood.

I'm not sure this is the "final design"... just enough to make it functional right now. Part of me is debating making a "run off" pan, just make the front a little longer.

Re: Cobra R hood drainage pan (custom build)

I was just checking. It seems though even though you poured that much in there would still be a constant flow, and thus it would spill over. Then again it's rained here for the last two weeks straight so I'm just used to a lot of water lol

Actually, from looking at where it lines up tonight, the water would be "spilling over" right by the belt, so it should still stay mostly, if not completely, off the top by the coils.

Re: Cobra R hood drainage pan (custom build)

On my brothers R hood I have been contemplating drilling holes in the corners (where your cut outs are) and putting drain hoses under the hood which route out of the way. Only to eliminate any standing water in the indention while sitting. (Even though it is under a Garage.)

yeah, anyone know what fuse I can "add a fuse" to, that shuts off when the car shuts off?

Can you explain for what? Are you looking to add something electrical and need to fuse it? Other wise just check for either an Acc. or Ignition fuse or wire such as the radio.

never use the radio... interference buzz FTL. I have the dual widebands hooked up to the cigarette lighter, but had to splice in a switch to shut the bastards off

The radio fuse should still get power, unless you disconnected the radio by pulling out the fuse, or I'm just missing something else.

the radio will pick up interference and buzz. I used fuse 8, it operates the engine controls and is on only in the "on" position.

Can you guys not talk about electricity and fuses. I was shocked when Obama was elected and just have about 3 1/2 years to deal with it.

I actually spliced into my fog light switch instead of the 12 volt accessory. It turns off with the car and does not come on with the key in accessory.

EDIT: no, not my fog light switch...my rear defroster switch.

yeah, I redid the pan today. Stupid LocTite didn't hold enough and the pan fell. I got some GOOP and Gorilla Extreme Duty tape... and a flat pan. It looks a million times better. I also wire meshed the louvers which prevents a lot of the water getting in to start with.

What does that have to do with the wiring comment I made? lol
