installing new 3.73 gears

Can anyone tell me what a good price is for installation of a set of 3.73 s in my 96 gt? Or how much of a job it is to do yourself? thanks for any help

Re: installing new 3.73 gears

I've heard prices ranging from $500 to $800 I believe, expect around the $500 mark however. I have not installed a set of gears so I can not give you a price quote and a lot of the personal guys I know that have had it done have cut deals with shop owners for real good prices. Expect a shop to take a few hours to do the job.

I've been trying to research the job itself for DIY, however if you are not an experienced installer and you are unsure exactly what and why you are doing it you run a high risk of messing something up. The job involves a very meticulous install, math and special tools to do.

Do some searching, there are a few "guides" out there to give you an idea of what is going on. I can start you off here: Mike's 2002 Mineral Gray Mustang GT Write-ups : Mike's Mustang - Pictures, Videos, Write-ups, How to's, Parts for Sale, Guest book

as stated above. it's always gonna pay off in the long run to have it done professionally(did i spell that right?). if u have any doubts on trying it urself then it's best not too. and id say depending on the shop id say anywhere from $450 upwards.

Re: installing new 3.73 gears

yea get it done right with a written warranty to protect aginst gear whine and breakage due to improper installation. They will ALWAYS try to pin it on racing and doing something hard on the car to break it regardless of what really happend though so just fyi

it should cost 200-1000 dollars sad but thats the range people get~ on average around 400-500

Re: installing new 3.73 gears

Yea, make sure it is done correctly. I bought a SRA from a buddy for my 2001 that had just had a COMPLETE rebuild with all new races, bearings, shims, diff, spider gears... etc, etc, etc.

After about 800 miles on the SRA I was driving down the road and my wheels locked up, released, and started making some noise. Tore the cover off to find my spider gears cracked. the local shop who did the rebuild refused to even look at it b/c our cars were modified. So as I disassembled the broken differential, I checked everything and finally found that they had left about 0.050 worth of shims out from behind the spider gears on both sides. My spider gears had separated a total 0.10 wiggled around , caught themselves in a bad position, locked up, cracked, and released. it Bent the splines on my axles and cracked my gears. I rounded up new parts and fixed it myself. My buddy paid $750 that was a waste...

Re: installing new 3.73 gears

^^ yup this is why you can pay more to have it done right or you can pay even more to have it done right the second time

Re: installing new 3.73 gears

That sucks that they did a crap job on the install. I believe I have these installed on my Cobra. Is there any way of knowing with actually taking the cover off and counting teeth and doing the math?
