Re: pop

pop from the motor? exhaust? front end? rear end? could be E-brake sticking, either the cable or the caliper, could possibly be a ball joint (usually only when turning though).

Re: pop

easiest way to tell is put the e-brake on, start the car, release the brake and put it in gear. Without hitting the gas see if the car moves under its own power. if its stuck it will either not move or it will move slower than normal.

U joints can also cause a pop noise when u put it in gear if they are wore out.

Re: pop

Its usually the cables that stick. Find where they connect to the rear caliper. The cable consists of 2 parts. The cable itself, then the black sleeve that goes over it. Use some WD-40 or PB blaster or some sort of penetrating oil to spray in between the cable and sleeve as good as u can, on both sides. Also, spray down where it hooks to the caliper and the spring. Work the E-brake a few times and do it again, etc. There are usually 3 cables. One from the brake handle in the car, and then one to each rear caliper. Wich means there is another joint where they hook together. Usually in the middle of the car, underneath. Though i have seen some under the back seats. You may have to do the same thing at that joint.

Re: pop

Do you use the brake all the time? Just start using it? Not use it for a couple days after the car getting wet?

It could also be something completely different. I've heard little creaks and pops from a caliper sticking caused by the guide pins being stuck. Possibly even something in the rear end getting a little loose, but that would prob do it every time u started to move.

Re: pop

i bought the car in february and i always use the e brake and i'm sure the guy before me did cuz when i test drove it he had it engaged. Should i take one of the rear wheels off to see if the cable is engaged?

Re: pop

it wouldn't hurt, if you have someone that can give you a hand. Have them engage the brake while you watch the caliper. then have them release it. See if the cable moves back right away. It should move back pretty quick, and make sure its about the same distance it moved when the brake was engaged. Check both sides. While you have the car jacked up, it would be a good time to check the u-joints also. Grab the drive shaft in one hand and the yolk in the other and try to twist them opposite ways. They should not twist. Do this at the front and rear of the drive shaft. Make sure you use something to chock the front wheels and use jack stands

Re: pop

Some of these cars just have weird pops...Tiff's 04 GT does it all the time. Sounds like something hitting the floorpan but there's nothing down there and hasn't ever messed anything up...

Does it sound and feel like it's hitting the floor pan?

is it noticeable every time the engine/trans loads up? (IE putting it in gear, accelerating, etc)

My 01 GT was doing the same thing pretty bad and it was actually phyiscally missing the trans mount to trans bolts.. so trans itself was hitting the tunnel..
