Air Conditioning problem - 96 Mustang V6

Hi, new user here. I have a 96 Mustang V6 automatic. It's summer, and my air conditioning compressor clutch will not kick in. I've checked the fuses in two places, and the AC clutch coil is supposed to work off the same fuses as the clock illumination, which works fine. I know the compressor is good, because I hot-wired it to the battery, and it works, blowing very cold air. I hate to leave it hot-wired, because it has to be disconnected from the battery before you shut off the motor or smoke comes out of the wire. Any ideas what might be causing the clutch not to engage, other than fuses?

Warm in West Virginia

Re: Air Conditioning problem - 96 Mustang V6

There is a low pressure switch if the freon is low it will not let the clutch engage i have fixed the problem by going to auto zone get a can of 134a and charge hose and install on the low side while installing the clutch will start working. the correct way to do it is to have a set of gauges and read the pressures and adjust as needed. (they make dye so you can find the leak) i could go on an on

Re: Air Conditioning problem - 96 Mustang V6

Thanks for the help, but been there, done that. I put in the freon, and thought the clutch would kick in during the process, but it didn't. I think it's an issue of the ac compressor clutch not getting juice, since it works when it's hotwired directly to the battery. Does this make sense? Any other ideas?

Re: Air Conditioning problem - 96 Mustang V6

Thanks for the answer. Just to clarify, is the low pressure switch the electrical connector on the compressor? I've hotwired from the compressor to the hot battery terminal and everything works the way it's supposed to. Can you tell me where the switch is located, or what it looks like? Thanks again.

Still warm

its on the tubing going back to the reciever you will see two wires coming out there are two, high pressure on the smaller tubing and the low pressure on the bigger tubing
