Im looking at getting a short throw I found the Steeda Tri-Ax TR-3650. I was wondering if anyone has tried it or knows anything about it.

It's not bad, I had a triax in my GT. Look into an MGW though....you won't regret it. MGW LTD., INC. - CNC Machined and Turned Parts. Accessories for the Corvette, Mustang, and Viper

Re: Short Throws

I have a Pro 5.0 in my '02 and it is quite nice. All my gears are right there and it's not a far reach at all. The arm goes straight up and doesn't bend towards like the stock one. I rarely (maybe twice) miss third gear. This is also my first manual car.

While the Pro 5.0 is nice I've heard nothing but good things about MGW, just like PureVenom mentions. I'm hoping to pick one up soon.

Re: Short Throws

Yeah the shifter is not just a knob, It's the whole piece.

Check out MGW LTD., INC. - CNC Machined and Turned Parts. Accessories for the Corvette, Mustang, and Viper.

It's an arm and a base which bolts in right into the top of the transmission.
The install for it is very straight forward. At least for 94-04. The trim around shifter pops right up giving you access to the tunnel. Four bolts come out which holds in the dust boot and covering. After this you will see the transmission top and another four bolts. Those four bolts come up to reveal the inside of the transmission. Remove the whole arm shifter and clean the top of the transmission of the sealant gunk being careful not to get any pieces inside. Place a new bead of usually RTV sealant around the base of the transmission and install the new shifter.

MGW, I hear, sends a wealth of information on the install plus all necessary hardware and sealant to get the job done. In fact the install also come on a CD and I hear guys bring their laptops out to their garage, sit and watch it and go along with it during the install.

Foxbody cars are the same I believe except it's a little harder to get to the transmission tunnel through the center console. However I am not sure MGW manufacture's a shifter for the foxbodys. They do have it for T45/T5 transmissions so I assume it should still work.

For the new body styles (S197) I hear the install is a tad more complicated and a little more involved only because a few links must be disconnected and you have to get underneath the car.

Re: Short Throws

No, you can just swap out the shift knob. It will fit the stock shift handle. It also has a screw in the side that lets you set the knob any angle you want it so you don't have to screw it all the way down and have it at the wrong angle.

Re: Short Throws

I helped my friend with a 2008 GT install a MGW shifter

it came with:

shifter and all parts needed individually wrapped AND labeled as to exactly what they were.

Full printed instructions in GREAT detail

A freaking VIDEO of the installation on CD

dynomat sound deadening with a foam sound deadening pad

I was very impressed with the lengths they went to, top notch quality.

On a 99-04 you wont get the dynomat and pad as you dont need it.

I had a steeda shifter and now when going back to a car that has steeda vs mgw... steeda is VERY far to the right (due to the adjustment ability of the mgw) and makes MUCH more noise.

basically if you want the best its mgw for all around, pro 5.0 is nice as well but a little to short for daily driving.

if you get a shift knob that has the same thread pattern as your stock handle or what ever handle you have then you will not have to change anything out to use it

Re: Short Throws

The tri-x is alright I had to modified mine to get it closer to the drivers side and add a little height so the reach was where I wanted it If I had to do it over I'd get the MGW

Re: Short Throws

Mgw is def the way to go, I'm running a triax with the mgw handle and it works really well. If i ever replace it, it will be with the MGW for sure!

Re: Short Throws

^^ keep in mind the normal shifter handles that come with the mgw wont work on any other shifter, they used to or perhaps still do make a shifter handle for stock style shifters.

Re: Short Throws

just make sure it has the adjustable shift stops on it. Thats what will protect your transmission. After that just get one thats the right price for you.
