want to learn how to really drive...

alright so iam 18 years old and i bought my first mustang abt 3 months ago its a 2000 mustang GT with a cold air intake and 3.73 gears. i am looking for some type of driving class or school that can teach me how to drive fast and the furious style lol. more or less. i guess i just really want to be able to push my car to the limits but still be in control and know what im doing.i am located in baton rouge Louisiana.
any advice or suggestions will be appreciated
thanks Justin

Alright...

First things first, drop that "fast and the furious" attitude right away...that ***** is fake, stupid, and will get your a$$ killed...

Secondly, a great driving experience for a young driver learning the "in's & out's" of a car would be attending a local auto-x event or auto-x school...The Central Louisiana region of the SCCA (which is centered in Baton Rouge) has an event coming up in 2 weeks...That would be a good place for you to learn without getting tickets or hurting anyone or anything other than maybe some cones & your pride....Ask DarkShadows about it....

See the following thread:

http://www.mustangevolution.com/forum/t141454/

Autox is basically like a "time trial" on a technical road-course layed out in cones covering an open area of concrete/asphalt...The idea is to make it around the course in the fastest time...You are handicapped based on the class your car falls in...Miss a gate/cone, you get a DNF...Hit a cone and its a 2 second penalty...you'll see all sorts of cars...

It is an event where you just show up; however, the guys with a lot of seat time will have a lot of experience...They would be more than glad to let you ride with them and willing to ride with you to give you pointers & teach you how to handle your car...to teach you what it means when your car does certain things...The only way to really "learn" how to drive your car is SEAT TIME...

Sounds fun and legal. Do you know if auto-x comes to Chicago? I know when the Good Guys come to Joliet they have some sort of cone cornering event, is this it? Sorry to kind of get off topic in a way.

Lots & Lots of them...I run my 05 GT at lot of Regional events in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, & Arkansas...I also run a lot of National Tour & SCCA ProSolo Events all over the country...I am going to the National Championships next month in Lincoln, Nebraska...

I will also be at the event in that link at the Evo Center in Zachary...you are more than welcome to ride along with me if you intend to show up...

Here is a link to the Chicago Region SCCA website:

Chicago Region, SCCA

You can go there for useful information & calendar info regarding your local region...

Here is a link to the main map on the SCCA website showing all the Regions around the country:

I will run either esp street or stx I would imagine...I am not so concerned with pax & where I finish as much as with getting the little bit of extra seat time before Nationals in September...WOOT!

Re: want to learn how to really drive...

I am sure there are some similar events in your area. Check your local SCCA regions and see if they hold a Time Trial series. It's usually in there. I am posting some pretty cool video out of turn 2 at Duryea this weekend. Here is 1. Stay tuned. I also have some in-car footage.

In-car of a 122.7sec run at Duryea. If you want to run a hillclimb, THIS is the one. Basically, it's an autox on the bottom, a high speed run, another autox and a really high speed run. I cross the finish a hair over 120.

4pt bar minimum. I have a 6pt. Has to conform to SCCA GCR specs but only in tubing size and wall thickness due to the fact that this car is a Solo class car. Any car in the GCR must have at least an IT cage, I believe.

5 or 6pt harnesses no older than 5yrs.

Fire extinguisher.

Helmet. May as well have an SA2005 cause that will be required in '10 I believe.

Full fire suit. Head to toe. Belaclava if you have long hair or facial hair. If it's 1 layer, you'll be wearing nomex undies.

SCCA license and I believe you may have to apply for a Time Trial license but don't quote me on that. That can be taken care of at the registration tent.

After all that, all you need are a LARGE set of balls and good brakes. Obviously, this is no joke. No cones to knock over and laugh about. Spin outs rarely occur without hitting something. And when you hit something, it may or may not be repairable. I whacked a tree in 8 last year and cost me 7k to put the car back on the road in race ready shape. That also required new belts.

But it is fun. More fun than you can possibly have on the street legally and more than likely, illegally. No cops....except maybe those watching. NO TICKETS for going 120 in a posted 25 - which may be one of the most exciting things. And no other cars(you hope) or pedestrians(you hope).

Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association is the site. Come join us. We run a whole host of courses all different in thier own respects. The likes of Carrol Shelby and Roger Penske ran Giants Despair back in the late 50's or early 60's when that was part of the National circuit. The thread is 'Kings of Giants Despair' is where you'll find info on those 2 guys.

From street cars(with safety prep) to full blown race cars and everything in between run at these events. Typically $135 to $145 for the weekend. You can camp(which many do and party after the Saturday runs) or stay in hotels or motels. Up to you. The atmosphere is really awesome. People are helpful and information is abound. If you think you're driving poorly in turn x or y, ask a corner worker....they may have some excellent advice as many of them have driven in the past.

Yep. Safety equipment is key. After that, up to you. You can either follow the GCR cars and rules, or the Solo cars and rules. Simple. If you get confused, just ask. And if you only run 1 hillclimb a year, this is the one. 2.3 miles.
