1998 8.8 Rear end Questions

My buddies Dad has a 1998 Mustang (4.6) GT. He had it checked out and they said that the rear end needs to be replaced. So he was wondering what is the life span of the 8.8 rear end (in miles)? What would cause the rear end to go? The car has 8X,XXX miles on it. Im just helping a friend out so any help would be great and appreciated.

The whole rear end should not have to be replaced...it's fairly easy to rebuild it if necessary. 80xxx miles is kinda early though, might just be a bearing replacement is all it needs.

What is it doing to make someone think the whole thing needs to be replaced?

Re: 1998 8.8 Rear end Questions

When you accelerate there is a weird clunking and grinding noise. Yeah I said the same thing that it shouldn't be totally replaced, but um would it be cheaper to just rebuild it or get a completely new rear end (He is kinda cheap)? Oh also were can I find like a rebuild kit or what not?

Re: 1998 8.8 Rear end Questions

i can see it needing to be replaced if the carrier races spun and wore out the section of housing. ive seen it happen. unless the shop in incompetent......wouldnt hurt to get a second opinion. worst case scenario, its not like that rearend isnt common
