Gears

I've got a 04 GT I'm looking at getting new gears for it. Should I go 3.73 or 4.10s. I've had people telling me both ways so I'm just looking for some advice. Thanks

Re: Gears

for a daily driver 3.73 for manual trans 4.10 for auto. The reason I say 4.10 for auto as the gear set in the auto is lower than the manual so the 4.10s help offset it to even things out plus it needs all the help it can get.

If you plan only on the car being a track car then you need to determine how much gear you can take so you dont have to shift into that one extra gear just as you cross the line. This will be different for 8th mile and quarter mile as well.

Re: Gears

Did you install them yourself or take them somewhere. I've never changed gears so I didnt know how big of a project it was.

My pops and I have swapped the gears out of a GM 10-bolt (F-Body) several times. I assume that the process is pretty much the same with an 8.8". It's quite an ordeal. You've got to press the bearings off of the old gear-set and press the new ones on. That's beyond the scope of most people's garages, unless you've got a serious hydraulic press. It's possible that you'll have to do it multiple times to get the pinion depth and the backlash *** set right.

Also, I'd never put a 4.10 gear set on a street car. It'd be geared like a tractor.

Re: Gears

dont do it yourself if you dont know how, you are looking for trouble if you try to do it and dont know what you are doing as its not just a bolt in and go kinda thing.

Install generally runs 200-400 bucks~

since you DD your car go 3.73s if manual 4.10s if auto, expect 2-3 mph loss on highway, but expect to pick up 1 mpg city~

Re: Gears

I also have a 04 gt manual thats a daily. I was thinking 3.73 as well. My cousin keeps saying 3.55 would be best to get rid of any bogging, open up a nice quick throttle response without high reving while daily driving. While it does make sense, I know he is used to the older 5.0's. I told him these motors are quite different, and the gearing in the 3650 transmission is quite different from the older stangs. Not to mention the old GT came with 2.73 or 3.08, typically. I told him from what I have read online, the 3.73 would be more comparable to the 5.0's with a 3.55. Would that be correct? Does anyone still go with 3.55's?

Re: Gears

Well..the way I see it is if you're gonna put gears in might as well see a difference.

You have 3.27's right now, go ahead and bump up to the 3.73. If I drop my rear end again in the near future it's gonna get 3.73's over the 3.55's that came stock in mine.

Re: Gears

4.6L.s are high rev engines that suck down low so the higher gear will help more than 3.55s

If ya think 4.10's are bad try 4.30's in a daily driver !!! LOL ! Especially with a five speed .

Re: Gears

the 4.6 motor is a high reving engine, doesnt make good low end power for the most part so a higher gear is nice to have in this case, but the rpm isnt quite peeky enough IMO for a super high gear.
