Engine swap help?

I drive a 2002 Mustang GT 5spd with 132000 miles on it. The engine is bone stock and so is the transmission except for the clutch. This past weekend it finally gave out on me on a long drive for a camping trip. The harmonic balancer somehow fell off on the highway and messed up the crank plus it overheated and the heads are gone. According to the mechanic i need a new engine. I want to swap my dead engine for a 4v 4.6L. Im a college kid so i wont be able to afford a supercharged one but what all is involved in the swap? Will i still be able to use my same transmission, wiring, etc...? i wanna go the cheapest route with this while still getting a 4v and low mileage engine. my car is a daily driver though and needs to be done right and be reliable.

Re: Engine swap help?

it can and has been done. you are gonna need a complete engine with all the acc. a complete harness and PCM. It's not gonna cost a lot more to get a supercharged version out a 03-04 cobra. It's the only way to go IMO. your not really gonna enough from swapping to a 4V if it's not supercharged to make it worth it. If staying N/A it's best to just stay with the 2V.

Re: Engine swap help?

if you get an engine out of the same year (99-00 or 01-04) then it should be pretty straight forward. I think 01 used COP instead of an ignition coil with plug wires~ but I am not sure.

You can probably find a 96-98 cobra motor for around 3000~ that would swap in but not sure what all engine harness wise changed. For the most straight forward cheapest way just get an engine like yours and swap it in.

Re: Engine swap help?

if your looking for a cheap straight forward engine upgrade i would just go with the 5.4 swap... do some research on it
1998 GT/ BBK CAI/ Summit Racing 75mm TBody/ Bassani X-pipe with Flowmasters/ 5.4 swap in progress (slowly but surely) It gonna make that Chitty Chitty go Bang Bang:burnout:
