Can I use these new tires?

Well I got a Mustang 2003 and I'm interested in buying new tires and I found some new one on a webside but they are originally ment to be on a mustang 2005+, so can I still use them on my 2003 mustang? They new tires are 215-65-16 and the ones that already are mounted on my mustang are 225-55-16, so will I be able to use these new tires?

Thanks!

well now that i think about it it might work but they will hang over the rim more. ask whoever is putting them on. but i would recommend u get the same size you have.

Re: Can I use these new tires?

Upton... ya got it backwards. They'd be narrower.

to OP... Are you talking about the wheel or the actual tire? I can tell you right now your speedo will be off by a little. You're going to be running narrower tire, so I guess "TECHNICALLY" it might be a little unsafe, but unless you're doing Autocross or just drive like a friggen maniac, you probably should be fine.

If you want a definative answer, talk to a tire specialist.

The tire wall will be thicker I believe and I believe the offset is different so the rim will either sit out further, or in closer in the wheel well. The lug nut pattern is the same and besides the mentioned differences the 5 lug rims can be mounted on any year (assuming the bolt pattern is the same).

Re: Can I use these new tires?

Thanks for all the answers! And I'm talking about the whole wheel sorry!

Alright, the 225 and 215 are millimeters I think so this new tire I'm thinking of buying is then 10 millimeters less wide. Other than that all should be fine then? like the bolt pattern etc. But maybe those 10 millimeter will look stupid..

I guess I will have to talk to an tire specialist as Lumina said. But thing is here in Sweden that its hard to find some specialist that know something about Mustangs, its not that usual here

Thanks again!

Re: Can I use these new tires?

25.4 mm = 1 inch for reference, and remember with tires its split. Half on the inside of the rim and half on the outside. 10mm is not a huge difference (5 mm per side).

If you plan to run 2005 GT rims on your pre 05 mustang you will need wheel spacers as the offset is not enough and they stick in to much. You can get by with it but they will rub and look funny. Wheel spacers fix this, I am not 100% sure on the offset they have but you may need as much as an inch spacer (i need specs to be sure though)

Finally, if you go with a tire that is supposed to be on a 2005+ mustang it will be .25 inches to high (.5 inches top/bottom overall) and will look funny and throw your speedometer off.

Re: Can I use these new tires?

Here's some info from American Muscle
Ford Mustang Technical Articles and Mustang Tech Guides from AmericanMuscle.com

Among the list are a few articles which explains tires and rims and you can get a good idea of what will work and what won't. This way you don't need to find the greatest specialist (but make sure you don't know more than him )

I've been meaning to read up on those articles as well, just to refresh my memory and learn all those little details I don't know.

And yes those numbers are in millimeters. The first number is the tire width, the second number is the percentage of tirewall compared to the thread width and that final number is the rim size which is in inches.

Re: Can I use these new tires?

Alright thanks everybody for all the help, I've learn something new now!

I guess the best would be to find wheels with the same size as the one I'm using, better be safe ..
