Just got paid. =)

well I just worked the Canfield Fair and gotthis nice chakc for $450 in my hands. I have a 1998 mustang gt, cold air, flowmasters, with 95,000 on it.

My question is what would be my best bang for the buck power wise. I only have $450 no more. My buddies tell me 3.78 gears in the rearwould be the best bang for the money. How much would installation cost usually if all the work and disassembly was done and all the mechanic had to do was install the gears, bears, shims, ect. anyg ot a rough estament

So what would you guys sugest?

ALSO: My buddies tell me 3.78 or 4.10 gears in the rear would be the best bang for the money. How much of a difference would i notice in acceleration from the stock to the 3.78 to the 4.10? How much would installation cost usually if all the disassembly was done and all the mechanic had to do was install the gears, bears, shims, ect. anyone got a rough estament?

Thanks ED

Re: Just got paid. =)

5.0 ls1 would be good engines to go with. for 450 bucks you can buy some gears but you'll have to save up around 400 to get them installed.

If you have a manual i'd definatly say 3.73 that will lose 1 or 2 mpg if you have an automatic most say 4.10 but i'd still go 3.73.

first things first, id put on some zz top - just got paid (title reminded me of it lol).

as for gears, the general consensus on the board is 4.10 for auto, 3.73 for manual.

ok what you guys think save the $450 save up another $200 but that kit they have on Americanmuscle with the tuner, gears, oil, and bearing replace kit. would probably be the best thing to do money wise?

Yah, that wouldn't be a bad deal at all. I'd just make sure you can order custom tunes from American Muscle. The off-the-shelf tunes are no good. You may also want to look into a tlok rebuild kit for your differential since your pushing 100k miles:

Ford Racing 8.8" Traction-LOK Rebuild Kit w/ Carbon Discs at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!

I couldn't see the labor being too much since all the mechanic has to do is install the gears, set backlash, shim, torque specs, all that stuff. Maybe around $200? Just make sure he knows how to do the install well, for if it's done wrong, it'll be costly to fix.

Re: Just got paid. =)

so all in all I'm looking at gears, tuner, rebuild kit 1, rebuild kit 2, oil, labor.

so once i add all these up i should be able to drive away correct? or am i missing another thing?

also: not looking to nit-pick but seems like alot of money for what seems to be a semi-easy thing to do....is it really worth it all for around $1000 bucks? In other words will it make me pee my pants compared to how it use to run? just looking for oppinions

gears, tlok, and install will probably run you 400 for parts and another 200 install but make SURE its done right. I would save up some more to do it. That or exhaust.

Re: Just got paid. =)

Gears are one of the most effective mods one can do for a v6, especially an auto.
I'm sure there is a noticeable increase in acceleration and launches in the v8's. I would think it would really help auto v8's as well.

Since a lot of people end up doing internal building in the 2v engine or throwing a power adder on, they usually add taller gears to match the higher power output.

Maybe someone who has swapped taller gears in will chime in...
