o2 and exhaust troubles

Im running a 99 svt cobra, just changed out the stock exhaust for an off road exhaust because the cats were completely plugged, after that ive been getting the same two codes no matter what i do, first i ordered a pair of MIL eliminators unplugged the battery after installing to reset the computer. it was fine for a day but then the light came back on, i was a little upset cause i just spent 60 buck on something that didnt work, but americanmuscle.com was cool about it and sent me another pair for free, once again those did not work it was still throwing the P0420 and P0430 codes. i was fed up and took it to a shop with a tuner, they said the problem was taken care of, they charged me 45 and i thought that would be it. once again about a day later the same light came on with the same codes, im a little fed up with all of this crap all from the exhaust. does anyone know of any places in the detroit area where i could get the rear o2's tuned out? any help would be great

You might have an exhaust leak. I'd say the first place to start is any aftermarket exhaust components, check the gaskets and check any fittings and make sure it is all fitted together properly.

Did you get the codes and light before you removed the cats? I would think you'd trip the CEL with plugged cats. Also check your O2 sensors to ensure that they're not damaged, and that the wiring connectors are firmly seated on the sensors.

Re: o2 and exhaust troubles

it did come on when the cats were plugged, but the codes i got were saying the problem was the EGR valve, it was forcing off the connected airlines because there was too much pressure building up because of the exhaust wasnt flowing properly. as for the o2 sensors being connected right, the first time i put on the MIL elim. i did it with a small jack in my garage, but when the light came back on my first thought was that it wasnt connected right so i took it to work and put it on the hoist and made sure everything was connected right, i reset the car. and it still came back (i put on all new o2 sensors after changing the exhaust)

but as for there being an exhaust leak, i didnt think of that. i figured it would give me another code for that, wouldnt it? that could be the problem though, ill have to tinker with it next time i get it on the hoist. the only problem with that is theres that starter in the way on the passenger side which makes it annoying as hell to take apart, but if it needs to be done i dont have an option. either way the winter is coming so ill have to garage it anyway, maybe this winter i can throw in a supercharger while im at it

Re: o2 and exhaust troubles

Yea exhaust leak is the only thing I could think of that's causing the CEL since the MIL eliminators should stop the PCM from thinking there aren't any Cats
