Question Which V8 to replace V6 in '98 Stang

Hello All,

I'm looking into replacing my 98' Ford Mustang's stock V6 3.8L wiith a V8. So I'm tapping the Mustang brain trust at ME for suggestions on a replacement.

I'm assuming that 5.0L is the engine of choice. I'm not sure if the 5.0L will bolt up though and how much pain this will cause. I think that the 5.0L engine was discontinued in 95' and replaced by a 4.6L SOHC or 4.6L DOHC in the Cobra for about 25 more HP.

I appreciate any info anybody has on a V8 for this car. I plan on getting my hands on a Ford Serviice Manual or equivalent as well. This is my transportation to work so having the car down for mopre than say 2 weeks is not an option.

To put a v8 in your car, you will need the engine, at least a new bellhousing, new rear end, beef up your suspension, change your gauges, change your computer, and a ton of little things. It's possible, but it's gonna be expensive unless you find a donor car to get everything straight from it. For the same amount of money you could also build up one mean V6 and don't have to worry about your insurance going up.

Re: Which V8 to replace V6 in '98 Stang

if you have a manual transmission in your v6 it will work on the 5.0L, since they both use the same tranny. The flywheel and possibly bellhousing will be different along with the clutch assembly... but the tranny back will work. I would however upgrade the rear end to an 8.8 eventually, but the stock rear will be fine for non track use. (upgrade the 8.8 with better gears and it will make a good bit of difference)

You will need a different K member (a 94/95 v6/gt one) in order for the 5.0 to fit. The ecu and wireing will have to be replace... and wont be fun at all... but it can be done with time and patience. I dont belive the steering rack will be in the way, and I dont belive the radiator/fan will be in the way either. The control for the electrical fan will have to be fixed due to the 5.0 (most i belive) are cooled by a fan mounted at the water pump. You can buy a kit to go electrical.

I would build the motor before I droped it in. A stock 5.0L is hardly fast.... and they are cheap to build up good. Once build you will need to upgrade the radiator and radiator fan, fuel pump, and other such things.

It would be best to have the car parkable for a good bit while you do the swap and weed out the issues.

GTs and V6s have the same suspension.

No they aren't. If you drop a V8 in a v6 chassis, the front will be sagging much much lower b/c of the added weight of the engine.

Its not much more weight, the GT front springs are nearly identical to the V6's if not identical. I know some years they were 50lbs stiffer~ 400 compared to 450 or something like that. I wouldnt worry about springs for the most part, you will want aftermarkets anyway.

The engine is an extra 100-150lbs. Go sit on the hood of your car and see how much it sags. Hardly any if you sit where the motor is.

Trust me, it won't sag

Re: Which V8 to replace V6 in '98 Stang

spector is right, build the motor then drop it in all at once...just easier that way.

the stock 302s (89-92) would be a better bet then the 86-88 speed density ones or the 93-95 ones with the hyper pistons. the fox 302 put out 225hp and 300ft lbs which is still better then the 96-98 4.6 and the 99-04 4.6 only have 35hp more. (in sohc form of course) cheap/easy to build is also a factor.

but with the factor of engine choices now on the market for different blocks/stroker combos and the 4.6 being the same size as a 460 you can put in anything you want. 289/302/351Ws will all bolt to that stock 5.0 kmember the 351W block is just a tad bigger and you would need a cowl hood most ikely. it all depends on how much power you want to make and make it safely and if your in a emissions area or not
