Grinding into 3rd gear

So this has been a persistent problem with my car.

Once the car has warmed up upshifting or downshifting into 3rd gear grinds. Only 3rd gear. Any idea what this could be?

Is my only option at this point a re-build?

It did it with my stock shifter and also with my Tri-Ax

3rd gear syncro, you can just fix it or if it has alot of miles on it would be a good time to freshen it up.

Yea I agree with the post above, the T-45 is known for syncro issues.

Re: Grinding into 3rd gear

yea sounds like a syncro is going out. You can try some syncromesh fluid but it probably wont help or if it does not much.

Re: Grinding into 3rd gear

It's definitely a synchronizer, mine did that in first gear (T5 transmission).

Agreed, same as T5 - Best course of action would be to have a trans shop dive into it - Or better yet upgrade the internals... There's one shop in the jersey area I can recommend that specializes in t5s/45s that I could recommend if you'd like...

HOWEVER, for what its worth I drove my 92 for 3 years - which was a T5 and weaker than t45 with a screwed up third gear synchro.. This included quite a few trips to the track..

Synchro for 2nd in my 2001 GT (also T45) has been shot since I got it almost a year ago

Some day when driving around try pushing the clutch all the way in/gently pushing shifter up to third (briskly, but not fast or hard) from second..

Mine only grinded when shifting quick or if clutch weren't FULLY disengaged

He has an 02-04?

In that case - There is a TSB out for the TR3650 and this issue, I'd rebuilt several - my 02 GT did that into second and third, and always felt 'grabby' when driving normally (like you could feel the car slow down a bit when the synchros/gears engaged)

Doubt it'd still be under warranty, though..
