Re: 1997 GT enigine swap with 04

Here are some of the answers I believe you are looking for. I recently swap my 96 gt engine for one out of a 2001 GT. You will need to use your stock 97 computer, don't try to use a newer on 99-04 due to PATS problem. My 96 computer with no tune done a great job. When I started the car for the first time It was a little confused for about 5-10 minutes. After that it was smooth sailing. The 99-04 accessory brackets are configured a little different than the 96-98 cars. I used the 01 set up & belt with only one minor issue. The passenger coil pack bracket will need minor mod to work correctly. In saying that, I used the only bolt that lined up to mount it & have had no problems. If you want to keep it simple & cheap reuse your 97 coil packs. They work just fine & also kinda camo the pi engine!!. I reused my 96 oil pressure sending unit due to the 01 having a different plug on the end. The 96-98 cars have a low oil level sensor that plugs into the side of the oil pan towards the bottom. You can either use the 97 oil pan or do like I did & use the 01 pan & tie the plug to the clutch cable. I check & change my oil reguarly so I wasn't to concerned with the sensor. If you have a updated 97 non pi intake ( cross over ) you can remove the front cross over & install it on the 99-04 intake to keep from having to drill & tap for one of the temp sensors. The 96-98 cars have two in the crossover verses the 99-04's having one. The 96-04 manifolds are the same except for the bolt diameter size on the passenger side. The 96-98's are bigger than the 99-04's. It's was a real easy swap almost 100% direct just a couple little things that can be taken care of while on the engine stand. One more thing to remember, if you buy a complete engine the 96-98 & 01-04 have the same flywheel. The 99-00 have there own. Try to get a 01-04 I personally believe they hold up better. Best upgrade that I could have possibly done to this car. It also turns out to be a better engine that a PI swapped one. Hope this helps out.

Re: 1997 GT enigine swap with 04

that is some great info! thanks for the heads-up, I am planning a swap of a 99 into my 96. I have been searching alot of forums to come up with this info. I have a typhoon intake to go on it, and a set of .540 lift cams to go along. I plan to upgrade the timing chains while I have it apart as well. Anyone here have any advice for tunes to go along with it? Thanks again to Big show 98!

ok got my engine and have the old one removed. one ? i have is does the 04 come with a engine oil cooler cause where the oil filter attaches does not look the same from my 97 to the 04 and i need to know if i need to get an engine oil cooler or should i just reuse the oil filter adapter that came on the 97 engine. other that that so far thats the only complication. everything else looks good so far. i'll write up a small list of everything i had to do when i;m finished but first need some more help
