strange moan Whine under 3mph

title says it all. under 3mph theres this really low(but loud) whine or moan. its mph related, not gear related(so counts out tranny and motor).

possible culprits im thinking:

1) siezed rear calipers(sucks cause they were just replaced)
2) wheel bearings
3) rear end (Doubtful, but that would be sweet, 3.90 time!)

any suggestions?

Re: strange moan Whine under 3mph

jack up the car and spin the tires see if you can trace it down to the wheel/brake/wheel bearing

Re: strange moan Whine under 3mph

just did.

wheels spin pretty free, it takes some effort, but thats probably normal. theres no abnormal play (except for the backlash in the rear end itself) either side to side or up and down. brakes all look fine.

could it possibly be the ebrake cables heating up from the side exhaust causing the rears to get some tension in them? cause as of right now, its fine until ive been driving for 10 minutes or longer, and its only when im in stop and go traffic (where the heat of the exhaust would build up when not moving). perhaps ill have to fab up a nifty heat sheild or somethin.

get a friend to walk by the car as you drive at 3 mph and see if they can pin point its location.

Re: strange moan Whine under 3mph

well it only happens for a brief moment. its not a constant noise under 3mph and it is totally random.

after looking at everything in the rear, since im positive its in the rear(since i can drive by the wall next to my house and hear it), i drove around to try to get it to do it. nothing. zilch. nada. the few times it slightly did it, was when i had come to a stop sideways (IE to make a left or right turn at a stopsign), which leads me to believe it *Could* be the differential, since it only makes the noise at times when the differential has to make one wheel turn faster than the other. but its totally random, and after i realized its only in turns, it stopped doing it altogether.

im stumped. unless its my hot brake line theory, which would make sense since its not doing it during the cooler night, and only becoming audible during the day (as in, when im driving home at 5 in cali heat). though hopefully its either the brake lines (In which case i get to do some custom fabbing and make a heat sheild), or the rear end, which case i get to do some mods.

Re: strange moan Whine under 3mph

ive heard differentials make this sort of noise when low on fluid~ drain/fill the rear end and inspect it while the cover is off.

**** man, now more problems. batt loses charge after 2 hours. had to jump it thismorning to get to work, then when i went to star****s at 10ish i had to jump it again.

1 more problem and it will have matched the dsm for number of problems at one time.

Re: strange moan Whine under 3mph

Ha, I looked at the little indicator on my battery earlier, it has both the red and green things lighting up, I guess that means my battery is both good and bad.

Re: strange moan Whine under 3mph

oh well. aside from the moan, i have a feeling the car is just being an attention whore, since i havent cleaned her up in a while.

so i did some maintenance on the system(re-mounted the mach amps since the bracket they were on came loose and started moving around), cleaned and shined the hell out of the engine bay, washed the car, buffed out a few spots, touched up a few more, wetsanded and buffed some little dimples here and there, shined up the interior. tomorrow well be Zymol'n both my car and my buddy's srt4.

also, whenever i have troubles with the battery, i noticed(cause it did it once before) the cd player doesnt turn off when you kill the ignition. you have to manually shut it off. it did that all 3 times i had to jump it today. i could turn the cd player on with no key in the car.

now the cd player turns off and on with the car, and after 6 hours of sitting, car started right up. ****ing attention whore. ima nickname here "helleanor" cause shes giving me hell.

What's up with all the zombie threads popping up lately? The search function is a great tool but use a little common sense and check when the last post was before bumping something like this.
