Re: What motor mods do I need to start with?

OK, First, it's a good idea to kinda set a budget... or performance goals.
Best to make sure all the mods you do at first are compatible with the ultimate
goal you are aiming for. Such as, if you ultimately want an ATI SC setup, I would
not buy UDP's now, because the SC is belt driven and UDP's will reduce boost.
That's just 1 example...

So what do you have in mind?

May I also suggest an old post that kind of lays out a few "levels" of sorts that
may help clear things up? Here it is:

http://www.mustangevolution.com/foru...mods-5654.html

For Example, let's look at Stage 1 of the above post:

Stage 1

1. Dual Exhaust (2.25" for Naturally Aspirated Cars and 2.5" for Blown Cars and some big NA strokers)
2. Rear End Gears & Traction-Lok (3.73 for Manual & 4.10 for Automatic)
3. Cold Air Intake ***
4. Underdrive Pullies ***
5. Short Throw Shifter (5-Speed) or Shift Kit (Automatic)

*** Means these mods will be incompatible and must be removed if the car owner
were to buy an centrifugal SC kit, as the UDP will slow down the SC and reduce boost levels,
and the CAI becomes redundant because the SC kit includes it's own induction tubing.

It's a good idea to ask questions like you did, so we can help you save money !

Re: What motor mods do I need to start with?

I'd say a cat-back and aftermarket mid-pipe, with or without cats depending on how long and whether or not the car has to be emissions tested. Go ahead and do these both at once to save on install if you can't do it yourself.

Then I'd do gears, as stated before 3.73s for manual, 4.10s for automatic. Next, I'd get a set of underdrive pulleys and maybe a cold air intake. A timing adjuster is also a good mod for the 4.6 SOHC, but you will probably need to run a higher octane fuel if you want to bump the timing.

From here on out is where you start having to decide on how serious you're gonna get with the car, as far as the engine. There are still a couple other small bolt-ons you could do, but they start to get expensive for their gains, such as a throttle body or mass air meter.

Any mods beyond there are going to be pretty major and will require a little forward thought.

Yep... lay out your overall plan and we can help!

Re: What motor mods do I need to start with?

what are your final goals, determine realistically where you want the car to wind up and then work toward that. It may save you money in the end~

The first thing I would do is exhaust though, a cat back, then do more later (headers/xpipe)

What I would start with in order:

1. Aftermarket window motors
2. 19" Spinners
3. Change the headlight fluid
4. Chrome windshield wipers
5. Rotate air in tires

Just playin!

:idiot:

You change out blinker fluid first, then head lights.

Anyway, it would be nice to know what your Hp goals are to be able to help you do it all right the first time~

Re: What motor mods do I need to start with?

if you have an 5 spd, i'd get a shifter first, thats gonna be my 1st mod for t'eh cobra just because i can't stand the "18wheeler shifts"

thats just a comfort thing, but RGR's order other than that

Re: What motor mods do I need to start with?

Exhaust(cause a silent stang is just not right)
Gears
Shifter
Intake
Tuner(Diablo or SCT)
UDP
TB/Plenum Combo

thats basically it for bolt ons, the rest is gonna get tricky. after that if you wanted to stay n/a, a set of high flowing heads (Patriot) and cams (VT) and dyno tune should make for a nice pep. or if going the F/I route, a Procharger or Vortech.
