catalytic converter question

i've had my '00 gt for about a year now. when i first got it, the cats blew out. i got some aftermarket units installed at the local muffler shop. the new ones have crackled and rattled ever since they first put them on. sometimes it sounds like a bug zapper and sometimes more like a squeaky bed spring. the sound is worst when i first start the car, but it doesn't ever go away. the engine is running like a top. the clutch and tranny seem solid. the car does have some side to side vibration most noticable at slow speeds (my guess is engine hesitation due to the cats).
my question is this: is there something that would cause my cats to crackle, or do i just have bat cats?
it makes me wonder when the first set blew out completely at 82k miles and now the second set isn't operating properly.

any help would be appreciated.

Re: catalytic converter question

Before you do anything drastic make sure a clamp isn't loose and just rattling around.

Re: catalytic converter question

^+1 Definitely check the simple things like clamps.

They could be plugged as well. The easiest way is to either buy a catted h-pipe to replace the bad cats and piping, or go loud and buy an off road h-pipe or x-pipe. Only do the off road piping if you don't have strict emissions and don't mind an earth shattering rumble.

+1 Smelly fumes that resemble rotten eggs are probably caused by bad cats.
