Re: Stupid Question....

K&N FIRST!!! I have a 01 v6. I put one on mine and it not only gave it a little more horse power. But better gas milage also. You win all the way around.

Re: Stupid Question....

I'd say exhaust/intake with a tune would get you to around 275. You'd feel the best gain out of gears though.

Yes, throw in a knew set of gears if you want to tell a difference in performance for $200. Won't help your gas milage though. Can you even buy a exhaust system for that much money.

Re: Stupid Question....

i found the best bang for the buck was my 4.10's, so i would just save up to get some gears.

Re: Stupid Question....

How much do those run? Do you have to be a mechanic to put them on, etc?

If you have to ask whether or not you'll be able to put your own gears in, that means you won't be able to put your own gears in. They have to be shimmed exactly right or they will whine like a friggin' banshee. You should also remember this when deciding where you want to take the car to have them put in. If you get a mechanic who is in a hurry and doesn't take the time to ensure that they are set-up 100% correctly, you'll end up with the whine.

The gears themselves can be had for under $200. Last I checked on 4.10s for an 8.8, they were less than that. I think it was around $150 at Ford & Ford Racing Performance Parts - GEFRacing.com. However, you can expect to spend at least $2-300 to have them installed by a competent mechanic. Also, when you buy the gears, go ahead and order some Ford brand friction modifier. You'll need that as well. It's only $5-10 bucks though. When you get it in, be sure to take a big sniff of it too...

Re: Stupid Question....

Yes EXHAUST def!!!! First thing I always do when getting a new car is tint, wheels and exhaust. You can make a mustang sound dang good. I put flowmasters, took the cats off, and an H- pipe on. I'm planning on putting long tubes on sometime. You may want to check on a Diablo programmer too.

Re: Stupid Question....

exhaust / shifter (unless you are unfortunate and have an auto) those are usually the two starter mods, then its up to you depending on what you want in the end.

Other potentials
CAI
UDP
Dyno Tune
Lowering springs
rims/tires
window tint
etc

Post Re: Stupid Question....

You won't notice much power increase, sound more than anything. The flows can become annoying after a while but the CAI does improve throttle response and gas milage. Not to mention long term savings on air filters. Careful not to over-oil your filter! The oil can coat O2 and MAF sensors!

OK noting your $200 in a later post, I would say this:

Ebay CAI (maybe $80 shipped?) It has a decent re-usable filter.
UDP (this will net you some mileage) prices vary.
These are likely the 2 best mileage mods, and add power to boot.
Best bets for your listed budget, hands down.

After this, a better exhaust can add good sounds and possibly better
mileage too, many have reported. A good free-flow catback is reasonable
but well out of range of the initial budget. I'd do it in Phase 2 actually.
When you get more $$$ buckaroos

PS:
All the above suggestions cary some merit, but most are from personal experience
of modding their own vehicles. I have helped hundreds of people and my experience is
based on all of that. So for your budget, it's the best, and will help you save for the
next wave by getting better fuel mileage.

Here's another link about mileage:

Everything I've tried here WORKS.
