OK I have a 2000 Manual GT VERT with every bolt on I could buy and my grocery grabbing 3.5 SE Altima with my wife driving can smoke me. So I'm either a terrible driver or my car is embarrassingly slow. Will changing over to 4.10 gears make a difference or am I just going to waste even more money?
Here is a list of what I have done which I will move into my sig later: Diablo with Peformance Tune. Generic AM CAI. Flowmaster Cat Back Super 44 and tons of cosmetic stuff.
You have 3 things done to your car which is from the factory about one second slower than the Nissan. You have nowhere near 100s of boltons. Exhaust, Tune, and CAI probably only netted you about 20-25horsepower all together (best possible situations). Gears will give you an upper hand on the launch and probably put you guys in the runnings together if at all
Saleen, The bolt ons where less than a grand all together and what you said is about what i expected as far as gains. I guess I'm going to have to force some air in there but with 90K on the ODO I may have to pull the motor and replace some of the internals before I add a Supercharger. The car is ten years old so I'm hesitant to add more to the car then its worth but I'm also not ready to buy a new car. If I scratch the fender the insurance company would consider it totaled. ;')
stock 99-04 GTs run mid 14 stock with manual transmission and an average driver FYI
with all the bolt ons and gears (no suspension work) figure in the 13s high 13s. Many have made it into the 20s with suspension work and sticky tires (in coupes with weight reduction)
No Im not a troll. I just woke up a little frustrated this morning and I'm just trying to figure out what to do with the car. I posted some pics this morning in an album here. I bought this car from my brother a year ago as he was about to trade it in for an 09 for next to nothing and I knew this car had potential so I grabbed it. I got most of the cosmetic stuff out of the way and now I just want this car to move. Its all about risk and reward and if I choose to spend a few grand on upgrading the motor, I'll get it to where I want the car to be. I've just seen to many cars get wrecked and lost so I get a little nervous. I have been reading this forum for awhile and have definitely benefited from it. I love this car and would really like to wake it up. I'll keep you guys posted as to what I do.
4.10s will wake your car up for sure, assuming you still got stock gears in there now. You'd feel a much bigger difference with those than you did when you installed your CAI and catback. Is it enough to beat that altima? Cant say for sure but considering how relatively inexpensive gears are, if you do go that route, I doubt you'll feel like you've wasted money
I'd like to know a few additional details,
1) What year is the Altima? 2 door or 4 door?
2) Is your car an automatic or manual transmission?
3) Are you absolutely sure the car is a GT (4.6L motor) as opposed to the 3.8L motor and the car just has "GT" badging?
Upgrading the rear end gears won't give you more horsepower, but it will increase the torque put to the wheels. What this comes down to is quicker off the line acceleration and a possible "even" torque range through the gears.
I would look at the tune of the car first. Is it a handheld tuner, that is can you adjust the parameters yourself, or ca the tuner also function by uploading new software to the car? Either way I'd have the car re-tuned by someone that knows how to use the tuner. It can be very possible that if you adjusted the parameters yourself you did more damage than good.
You would need to spend 4-5k on a supercharger setup to end up at 400-450rwhp and thats THE LIMIT on that engine. If thats not fine with you you could look at an 03 cobra for around 19-20k that starts at about 360-380rwhp stock and the limit is 600+ rwhp
The altima he speeaks of has to be newer than 02 to have he 3.5 in it. And don't let it fool you, the car is rated at 275 horsepower and based of the same motor platform as the 350z just detuned
Guys sorry for not responding. I was getting e-mail updates for a short time and then it stopped so I though the tread was over. OK so I bought the 08 3.5 Altima before I got the GT. Its the 3.5SE Auto 4 Door and just so you understand... I LOVE my Mustang and I can't wait to give the Altima back when the lease is up in October. I leased the Altima because I changed jobs and wasn't taking the train to the city and needed a commuter car. A few weeks later my brother decides to get an 09 Stang and thats when I grabbed the 2000 from him. I spent the winter restoring the cosmetics and then got to work on making it faster. I changed the headlights taillights, added the stripes, chin spoiler, grill delete, changed the wheels.......etc Even though they may be comparable in speed, the mustang with the top down is so much more fun to drive. Also, I'm sure my POOR driving skills should be considered and I'm trying to get a few of the guys together who can drive too race these two cars. One of my good friends is an ex-Ford Mechanic and we are going to install the 4:10 gears in a few weeks. I already installed the 93 Octane Tune with my Predator and that made a difference. I'm also considering weight reduction. I have speaker box with two 12's and I still have my spare in the trunk. I'll keep you posted and if I can coordinate the race i will send you some pics or video.
THAT right there is your problem. Those HEAVY ass magnets.
