X pipes???

Who has these and what do you think about them? Was at my mechanics today having him go over my new purchase which was a '99 Saleen. He said that I should get "X-pipes" put in. Said that it would add about 15 hp and would really "wake the car up." Anybody agree? HE said it would run about $500...

Re: X pipes???

An X-Pipe connects to your headers and then connects to your cat back. It crosses in an "X" shape which it gets its name from. A lot of people run X-Pipes on their GT's and Cobras and are happy with them.

You can get an X-Pipe with or with out catalytic converters. If you get it without it you will have a problem finding someone to put it on since it is illegal to remove the catalytic converters.

Re: X pipes???

I would look into a set of longtube headers with a mid pipe connector of your choice (off road H pipe, X pipe, catted H pipe, etc)

Re: X pipes???

I have the UPR O/R X pipe on my car. It is a matter of choice which one you get. If I remember right, the H is a little deeper sounding. The X is a little more exotic sounding..although my car doesn't sound very exotic just loud as hell. lol

I definitely say get a mid pipe...but Specs suggestion is better. Get the headers too. Stainless works has a great system...expensive...but great. It is what is going on my car once I get whippled.

Re: X pipes???

May I recommend a DR. Gas X- Pipe with BBK L/T's. The only thing about a Dr. Gas X-Pipes is you have to get them welded but that is also one of the appeals to them. Most people say that their the best sounding X-Pipe also.

Re: X pipes???

I love the sound of Off-Road X-Pipes on 5.0/4.6 Motors as well. If you can pull it off go I would suggest no cats.

Re: X pipes???

the car comes stock with a H-pipe that resides between the headers and cat-back.

you have a wide array of options. you can either get a better H pipe, or a X pipe, and you can get both with or without catalytic convertors. without cats, they flow more and give more power, and are louder, but with cats, theyre legal and a little quieter. Xpipes give a more agressive and raspy sound up top, and Hpipes are a more mellow and deep tone. Xpipes generally do make a small amount more power than a Hpipe, but unless youre running a long tube, catless free flowing exhaust, the difference between the two will be negligible, the only difference for 99% of us is sound. of course, the sound will also depend on catback choice as well.

and no, no way they are 500. maybe if the shop fabbed them up, but then they will use your h-pipes hangers and flanges, and probably still use 2" pressbends. you can buy them from vendors from anywhere between 250-400$ depending on quality and if they have catalytics. you can get a catless h-pipe from mustangtuning.com (now americanmuscle.com) for 160 shipped if i remember correctly.

Bassani is probably what everyone is going to recommend. i have a bassani X pipe and catback combo on my 03 cobra, its ok, everyone else loves it, but i like a more muscle car sound. i have Spintechs (Custom Roush side exhaust setup) and the stock Hpipe on my 02 GT and love that, sounds like Eleanor in Gone in 60 Seconds to the T. when she sells, i will be getting some spintech mufflers for the cobra.
