03-04 cobra automatic swap

Currently have an 01 Mustang V6. Mods are irrealivant to issue, what is realivant is this, after doing all these mods, I've come to understand the importance of a 2nd car. Education through trial.

So, I'm considering an 03-04 cobra. Came across one for a reasonable price. So, theres a few questions that I'd like to explore. 1st....I know dropping an automatic IS possible. But, what exactly is involved? I'll explain the motivation later. 2nd, what exactly is involved in swapping the IRS for a solid 8.8?

Logic to the mayhem: I'm fully aware and capable of driving a manuel. But, all my experience and knowledge is with automatics....daily driving and racing, etc. Logic behind the diff swap: I have following the cobra for quite sometime now and its always inevitable, once you reach a certain power level or 1/4mi time, you get into snapping this or breaking that and the IRS then becomes an issue.

Anywho, I look forward to hearing what you guys have to say.

Re: 03-04 cobra automatic swap

How fast are you looking to run?
I have a 03 Cobra and I love it.... 6 speed is the way to go Bro.
I have run 12's in my car without any problems with IRS. Ask around they have a few guys on here that have 600 Plus RWHP and still have Irs.
Good Luck Buy it!

Re: 03-04 cobra automatic swap

google cobrabob.com and read his terminator FAQ, as far as prices and such go to svtperformance.com and look there are tons of them on there in great shape for sale, heck you will probably find one with an auto already in it.

the IRS when done right is a GREAT asset, but for strictly drag setups a live axle is the simpler way to go.

I say get the car first and then worry about swapping the rear end and transmission. Those pieces can handle quite a good bit of power. Besides, automatics take all the fun out of driving.

Re: 03-04 cobra automatic swap

the trans swap and the rear end swap are both not very hard to do.

The rear end swap is just a bolt in swap. the trans swap is only a little worse because of the changes to the computer and trans harness changes.

I really appreciate the response, thank you. I have plenty of time to consider. So, it appears I have much to learn and inquire.

I would definitely look into the 4r75w versus the 4r70w. It was available in the Mach 1 and is definitely beefier than the normal Gt/V6 automatic trans.

Really, didn't know that. What were the major differences between the 2?

Re: 03-04 cobra automatic swap

The 4r70w transmission was put in all V6 and GT automatic cars 99-04. The only automatic model to get a different transmission was the Mach 1 with the 4r75w. There was also a 4r100 which was available in several of the full size trucks.

The 70, 75, and 100 are the torque ratings; 700, 750, and 1000 ft./lbs. which is engine torque multiplied by 2 by the torque convertor. So, 350, 375, and 500 ft./lbs. of engine torque.

I do believe the truck transmissions have a different valvebody assembly than what you will need for your car.

Probably the best thing you can do is find a transmission rebuilder/builder who specializes in ford transmissions and have them tell you what works best. They should also be able to help you choose the right torque converter for your application.
