Brake light coming on and rear end

Ok so lately when I got to stop my brake light comes on. Plus I think my rear end is starting to mess up. It feels like it jumps. Now it could be from me catching seconds every wear I go haha. Its been doing it for awhile but seems to have gotten worse. I was wondering if the brake light coming on when I start to stop has a connection with my rear end.

Yeah, it just about has to be because of low break fluid.

As far as the rear end "jumping", does it do this most when you first start driving the car? If so, it could just be your tires. I imagine you have Z-rated tires. Tires with soft compounds like that have a tendency to "shake" when they are cold. Once they get warmed up after driving a minute, the problem should go away though.

1) brake fluid is low.

2) solid rear sucks. mine jumps all over the ****ing place where the same roads the cobra doesnt. reason why im switching to IRS on the GT.

Uh, no.

Solid rear does not suck... what sucks is the half *** engineered piece of **** Ford calls an IRS.

so it 'slams' into coasting/slams when you get back on the gas? is it a clunk or a jerk? and is your car auto or manual trans?

Good, because I don't either.

The IRS in the 99-04 Cobras is well known for its amazing capability to suck.

Re: Brake light coming on and rear end

U-joints would be my next guess.

Also, have you swapped the gears yet? If so, maybe they weren't shimmed absolutely correctly.

I suppose the calipers seizing up could also cause it like Brent mentioned, because from what I've seen the 99+ rear calipers seem to have a history of doing so. Check your rear rotors and look for any signs of unusual wear, mainly any type of groove being cut into the rotor. If this was the case though, you'd probably be experiencing more symptoms than you are (like a horrible grinding/scraping noise).

cause theyre usually strip only cars, or cars that see little street use. at the power level there isnt enough R&D in IRS to handle those stresses, so most go with a solid rear thats been in use for almost half a century.

good, dont quit.

Prove why it sucks. Prove to me why Solid Rear has any advantage in anything other than a fully built drag application. Prove to me why guys with drag radials and a IRS brace are outlaunching most AWD cars and having equal 60ft's as some tubbed and chubbed big blocks. Black 04 cobra at the track with DR's and IRS brace was running 11.4's consistently with a 1.6-1.7 60ft. can you do that with DR's? youd prolly be lucky to get a 1.9 or a 2.0 with solid rear jumping all over the place.

I guess thats just the mentality of those still stuck in their 5.0 world.

Its a GT thing. Get used to it. Theres alot of drivetrain slack in these cars. lets see, i have a clunk when:

1) put it into gear at a light
2) shifting into a higher gear under 3000rpm in 2nd and 3rd.
3) any quick variation of throttle in lower gears (2 and 3) above 1/2 throttle.
4) 1st gear in traffic when letting off or getting on the throttle anything under 1/4 throttle.
5) clunk in reverse
6) random clunks
7) letting off the throttle in any gear and then going WOT instantly afterwards gets a nice clunk

seriously not to hijack the thread again but my both my buddies 95 and 89 stang did it, another local guy with a 98 does the clunk. numerous posts about the clunk on every mustang site leave me to believe its just a mustang thing. Even the cobra does it if i get lazy on my shifting, it could very well be the 12mm bolt issue but its still another one of those "chalk another one up for fords better idea".

I believe my moan is coming from my drivers side rear caliper. for ****s and giggles i re-turned the rear discs and no moan whatsoever, for a week. then it came back. Remember back a while ago i replaced the rear calipers because i thought they were seized but in reality i just needed the ford caliper tool to stick the piston back in? the rears are all new items, brake pads, rotors and caliper were all replaced and i believe they are whats causing the moan, prolly just ****ty remans (they are from autozone). Its either that, or my axle bearings, which from what i hear, would only become noticeable at a certain speed.

check the LCA/UCA bolts as well if they are loose (or missing) it can cause the rear end to shift around and what not.

my '02 did it only if I was engine braking in a lower gear.. (3rd for example) then slammed the gas... a momentary shift of power would cause a jerk/clunking noise.. its everything spinning one way suddenly going the other, but it was not excessive at all.

My 92, which I beat to hell and back does not do this since I rebuilt the rear, my 89 never did it period. your friends 98 needs work too

Re: Brake light coming on and rear end

fords "fix" for bad geometry design in the live axle setup used since forever (up to 04) was softer rubber bushings so you sacrifice rigidity for sloppyness.

yeah no, its not excessive enough for me to get annoyed with it, but its just "there" sort of things.

and yeah, his 98 is tboned now, so that fixed that.
