brand of brake pads?

which of these brands is ok for brake pads?

Auto Parts and Accessories Catalog - 2002 Ford Mustang Brake Pad Set

naturally, I would love the ones that are $32 to be 'ok' but I doubt they will be. I have a brake pad change coming up in the next couple weeks .

maybe
eBay Motors: 99 00 01 02 03 04 Mustang Titanium Frt & Rr Brake Pads (item 190060841427 end time Dec-15-06 09:27:48 PST)

or would these work?
eBay Motors: 1999 Ford mustang brake pads (item 220059915015 end time Dec-18-06 01:00:00 PST)

(don't know if I included these)
eBay Motors: Bosch CERAMIC FRONT Brake Pads MUSTANG (item 180063706623 end time Dec-23-06 01:00:07 PST)

or lastly:
eBay Motors: HAWK HPS Front BRAKE PADS Ford Mustang GT, Thunderbird (item 170060330510 end time Dec-21-06 16:53:06 PST)

Re: brand of brake pads?

thanks. I just need to get an idea of what the hell is wrong, but I'm almost certain it's the pads. I'm hoping the caliper isn't failing. (only one wheel is acting up, and it has been for a little while)

Re: brand of brake pads?

what symptoms do you have? How many miles on the car? I know a few people (myself included) whose calipers went around 60K miles.

Re: brand of brake pads?

I just replaced my front and rear rotors and pads two days ago. All I did was went up to Autozone and bought their cheapest pads (Duralast). They stop my car.

Re: brand of brake pads?

if one side is wearing faster than the other, your caliper is probably sticking. check you slide pin when you change your pads. it may be sticking. just shoot it with brake cleaner and walk away. after you put it back together though. hopefully that will do the trick. otherwise, replace your caliper. padwise, i have no idea.

Re: brand of brake pads?

for symptoms... since I got the car (with around 70,000 miles on it) the passenger's front brake has produced A LOT of brake dust... easily 10 times what the other wheels did. My car now has 96,000 miles on it, and it sounds like the brake is staying down after I let off the brake... also, you can sort of hear it dragging as I'm driving ... but only very slightly. Am I going to have to replace the caliper also? What about the rotor?

Does your steering wheel shake when you brake?

Re: brand of brake pads?

no, the steering wheel doesn't shake... but that front side shakes just a little. More like the grinding causes it. So is the brake pad just dragging a little? I am scheduling myself some time to change the pads on the 27th. I'll flush the brake fluid at the same time... since I doubt it's been done yet.

Re: brand of brake pads?

brake pads shouldn't "drag". It sounds like it may be the caliper. Does the car seem to pull when you brake?

Rotors were 25.99 and pads were around 27-28. I just got the cheapest they had.

Re: brand of brake pads?

Turning rotors increases the chance of warping (makes them thinner). For the price of new rotors vs turning them, I think it's worth it to just replace them but that's JMO.

Re: brand of brake pads?

I'm using hawk HPS pads all around on the buick.. (and slotted rotors..) w/ braided lines to the front..

now stops hard enough that ABS kicks in over ~80% braking.. before it'd come to a stop more like... a truck

They're relatively clean, and though they grumble a bit more than stock, they don't squeal, so they're easy to live with

Re: brand of brake pads?

will the v-6 brake pads fit the front calipers on the GT? I'm winning the bid, and there's 7 hours left on it. Somehow, I think I'll end up getting them. I will also probably get the new rotors, cause O'Reilley's here is going to charge me $20 to turn each side of the rotor and the inside of the rotor is BADLY marked... so they may not want to turn it anyway, but it's also been turned a time or two before, as it's pretty thin. I was debating getting slotted and drilled rotors.

The GT and V6 from 99-04 both have the same PBR front calipers.

i dunno, its 5$ each to return them at Pep Boys if you just bring them the rotor (IE not attached to a car). if i remember its 30$ each at your local auto store.

being able to turn the rotor depends on how much material is still left on the surface. once its down to a certain point, it is too far out of spec to be turned.

as for pads, i just get the ones that dont squeal (ceramic i believe) that cost like 60$ a pair at autozone. any other ones squeal after a month.

Re: brand of brake pads?

yeah, I got the ceramic ones... and this is what I'm thinking.

Since the rotor has already been turned possibly a couple times, and is getting decently thin. I will just have them turn the inside face, which is the one with the grooving... and I'll leave the other faces the way they are, since there is NO grooving at all on them. Then, I'll replace the pads, and see if I get the same intense build-up of brake dust on my rim on that side. If I do, I will take it as the brake caliper failing. So, to fix this, Cobra calipers and rotors on the front ... that would be around January... after I have about a month to evaluate whether the caliper is failing or not, and that's 3 pay checks away. I can do the whole brake swap for around $300... so that makes me happy. Does it sound like a plan that'll work?

Re: brand of brake pads?

mileage really isnt a big deal. The 4.6L last a long time unless its abused (Look at how long they even last in taxis!). I have 88k on my 02 GT and 54k on my 03 Cobra (sold now), but then again i bought both of those from california commuters who drove them every day almost 2 hours.
