Drag Time '97 Mustang GT

Hello everyone, I just got back from the strip (my first time running.) Out of 5 passes, the best was 9.755@75MPH in 1/8th. My first run of the night was 10.099@73.89mph. I'd say not bad considering I have 2.73 gears and only Bassani X pipe with Hi flow cats, and Pypes Mufflers. What should I do next to start improving my time with out needing alot of funds. Also Whats Your best time so far?

Re: Drag Time '97 Mustang GT

The best thing you can do is get seat time.

When you get comfortable with the car gears and tires will be your best friends.

It might also be worth your time to look into doing a PI swap on the car if you are wanting to maximize the power potential of your 2v without heavy engine work.

Re: Drag Time '97 Mustang GT

Yea I would like to do a PI swap, but I would have do without my car for quite a while, not too much time to spend on activites, I have yet to start work on restoring a 1960 F100 for about 3 years. But yea, Seat time would be best for right now.

Re: Drag Time '97 Mustang GT

I dropped 3/10's on my 1/8 time by concentrating on my 60'.

Hoping to drop another 3/10's this fall by working on my 60' and shift points more.

My biggest problem is being able to duplicate a good run and remember where everything was at each second of the run. If you can figure out what works for the car and duplicate it you'll be ahead of the curve.

Re: Drag Time '97 Mustang GT

Yea my 60' isnt great, only one shift point for me to concentrate on, Im only in 2nd when I cross the 1/8th mile line. I can hit 45mph in 1st and about 77 in 2nd.

Re: Drag Time '97 Mustang GT

Well that means you'll be having to learn that shift very soon lol. Just a few small modifications or a good launch and you might need 3rd to cross.

I know my car is right on the verge of 3-4 when I cross. I finally decided to short shift into the power of 4th rather than come across tapping the limiter.

Re: Drag Time '97 Mustang GT

Wasn't quite awake this morning lol.

I top out 2nd about 100' before the end of the 1/8th. I decided rather than wind 2nd all the way out I shift a hair early to get into the power band of 3rd since it's making more torque at 3500 than 6000. I also have a roots blower and a 6 speed so it's a little different setup.

What I'm saying for you is it's going to get to a point when you'll have to use 3rd in the 1/8th mile, especially with gears. Instead of winding the motor all the way to redline, I'd suggest having the car dyno'd so you can see where you're really making power and where it's falling off. For the most part a NA 2v motor is not going to make much more power if you wind it all the way out instead of shifting 500-1000 before redline.

Re: Drag Time '97 Mustang GT

yea 2.3 60ft is not horrible but it should be 2.1 or 2.0 that will shave off a half second

Re: Drag Time '97 Mustang GT

Yea I have heard that within the first 60' it could be decided who will win. I don't think I will be able to improve much, being 2.73 gears, I am launching at about 2,500 RPM, anything I could try?

Re: Drag Time '97 Mustang GT

try some stuff and see what works~ everyone is different in launching~

gears will VERY MUCH SO waken that car up so consider that (and rebuild the tloc im sure it needs it)
