Replace Differential Fluid

Hello everybody, I have a '97 Mustang GT with 8.8 Locking rear end. I was just wanting to know what fluid I need to replace my differential with, I have driven my car about 20,000 miles now since I got it and I need to replace it. What would be suggested?

Re: Replace Differential Fluid

I cant remember the exact weight that ford recommends, but what ever that is use it but remember the friction modifier may be in the fluid or it may have to be an additive, just dont put in an additive if its already in the fluid~

Re: Replace Differential Fluid

ok thanks, What brands already have the additive pre-mixed. I know Royal Purple does but would it be worth it?

Re: Replace Differential Fluid

Its not a huge deal, but if you feel better with royal purple use it~ its had regular oil in it all its life im sure so it wont really make any difference now other than the reduction in heat you get by using a better lube~ which wont be much.

Re: Replace Differential Fluid

I think ford put synthetic in from the factory because that's what the tag says

Re: Replace Differential Fluid

yea I'm thinking that too, based on owners manual, change fluid every 100,000 miles.
Thanks for all of the help.
