Re: How good is the 4.6

Depends on what you do with it. Stock it is a great engine and it is very reliable if you keep it maintained.

Performance wise the 4.6 is as good as your wallet is thick. It has endless potential.

Yep. It's a SOHC 2v engine.

Re: How good is the 4.6

I think the single overhead cam is better than the double for reliability isnt it.

Re: How good is the 4.6

I've never had any experience with the 3v or 4v DOHC Mustangs. If PureVenom or SpectorV were online they could tell you more than I can.

How has your single overhead cam engine been treating you.

Re: How good is the 4.6

It's awesome. I love it. 118K miles I haven't had any problems out of it since I bought it. I do run seafoam through the vacuum every 3 or 4 months to keep the intake, valves, and cylinders clean and I give it and oil change around every 5K miles.

Re: How good is the 4.6

I think they all had single cams until 96 when the cobra was released as a dual cam 3v engine.

Re: How good is the 4.6

In 1996 when the Cobra was first produced. From what I understand it was the first Mustang to sport a DOHC engine. So '96 was the first DOHC

Re: How good is the 4.6

All GT Mustangs are single cam. All Cobra's are dual.
The GT has one intake valve and one exhaust valve.
The Cobra's have TWO intake valves and one exhaust valve.

They are excellent motors. What is the reason for asking though?

Re: How good is the 4.6

I've never heard of it until now. But it comes form the spark plug not being torqued down enough or torqued incorrectly. It causes the plug to become loose and then the compression in the cylinder forces the plug up, and the COP pushes it back down. With all the up and down movement it can eat the thread off and then the compression will blow the spark plug out when it's no longer held in by the threads.

You just have to make sure your spark plugs are tight enough when you change them.

Re: How good is the 4.6

Correction to above.. all 4.6 GTs 96-2004 were SOHC.

2005-2010 GTs were SOHC also, but with 3 valves per cylinder instead of 2

96+ cobra/mach 1 4.6s were DOHC

There's no difference in reliability, it's all in how its driven, how its maintained, and the quality of work when upgrades are performed.

The 96-98 GTs were not the most stellar performing models, but that in itself makes it a sleeper.. A lot of 99-2004 GT guys will upgrade their heads and unload their "PI" heads pretty cheap.. and it's not a terribly expensive swap at a shop.. It is good for ~40-50 HP gain..

Re: How good is the 4.6

the plug blow out ain't a big deal, I fixed mine in less then a hour, no need to remove the head, #8 blew on mine, a good hint is if you hear a knocking under the hood check the plugs first. I have 150k miles on mine and running low 12's.

Re: How good is the 4.6

they are generally good cars, as with anything its all in how you take care of them. Those that run the piss out of them and then get butt hurt when they blow up... what did you expect would happen? Especially if they have many mods are are not tuned who knows if the car is super lean or what.

Blowing plugs out is generally an issue on the 4v and newer 3v motors with 300+ hp and higher compression (or boost).
