Mach 460 head unit removal

Just recently bought a new head unit to replace the Mach 460 one. However I'm a bit confused about how to remove the old one. Some say that it's a simple as fabricating a tool from a coat hanger, inserting the ends into the 4 holes arounf the unit, unlocking it and sliding it out. Others say the shifetr trim and ventaltion trim need to come off and 2 bolts need to be removed. Which is it?

Thanks!

Re: Mach 460 head unit removal

depends on the radio if it has the 4 holes then you can do the coat hanger trick if it doesn't then you will have to remove the shifter trim wich just snaps off the vent/radio trim there are two screws that go in upside down under the front of the radio that you will have to remove then it will also snap off just lift the shifter trim becareful not to break the clips.

Are the holes exposed or are the behind the vent trim?

What year car do you have? If it is a 2001+ you can use my write-up located here:

2001-2004 Mustang Aftermarket CD Player Installation

If it's a 94-2000 you can use this write-up:

1999-2000 Mustang Aftermarket CD Player Installation

Any further questions just ask, I've done quite a few of these on both setups.

dont you need a special adaptor to make the amps work with a new head unit, or will it work at all with one?

Yes you do need an adapter. I bought from Crutchfield and they included the harness and trim kit for my Mustang.

Correct, with the mach unit you must get the correct adapter or rewire the entire car (much preferred if you really want to get the right sound).

Re: Mach 460 head unit removal

The guy at the ford dealer around here told me to get a jvc cd player because most of the new ones came out with the option to turn the amp inside the radio down so it wouldn't overide the factory Mach amps. It sounds better than the stock radio ever did JMO.

Re: Mach 460 head unit removal

Thanks for the help. FInalyy got around to doing it this week end. It was a sanp to dp. lowflynn's write ups were on the money. The only thing that took longet than anticipated was wiring up the harness. But the techs from Crutchfield were very helpful..
