Terminator Lifter Issues

2003 Cobra - 4.6L DOHC 32V

Well we've known for some time now that my brother has something going on in his driver's side head. We fought with an exhaust leak from the headers/manifolds for a while. We've eliminated that and it is very clear now. The noise is elminated after heat up.

So I had one of my techs next door at Ford take a look at it and give me a quote on side work for replacing all tappets but, I'm curious....

Has anyone on this site messed with these motors? How hard would this be? I know I'm fully competent in pulling valve covers and anything necessary to get to that point, but I'm not sure past that point. Anyone seen a how-to or write up?

Do you suggest he upgrade to the GT40 cams or others while doing this work?

LMK what you guys think.

It's a lifter noise. Only when cool or on startup. Fades after warm up cycle. Tap Tap Tap Tap.

Master cylinder won't be an issue. I can have it out in minutes. But I think the booster needs to come too... although still not an issue.

mine makes a squeek when i start it cold, i had a friend listen and he couldnt hear anything with the hood up, but from the inside of the car you can hear it (or behind the engine on the side) I think mine is just my clutch giving up lol well I hope its that.

No, don't bother with the GT cams...if he wants to do cams, just get a custom grind and do it right to get the most out of it. I know at one point there was a mass rush for everyone to get the GT cams as being the next best thing since sliced bread...but the 98 cobra cams actually improve performance more. The GT's were kind of a flash in the pan and once numbers came out there was seen to be little benefit of going to the, specially with a twin screw.

A custom grind wouldn't be all that much more...although with your discount, it would make the price difference a bit more noticeable. But I still say do it right instead of doing the GT cams.

Cams are nice..but there are better ways to spend money. If you're going to have the heads disassembled and really want to take the entire front of the engine apart then go for it. Have fun with the timing chains as well.

Are you sure it's not just an injector tick? I know my 60# have a little noise to them, it never quiets though.

No, it is not injector tick. I wish it was. This is clearing a valve guide or lifter issue. I'll let you guys know once we get into it what the outcome is.
