Grinding when shifting--what is it

I test drove a used 2000 GT with 100K miles,,, a couple times heard/felt some gear grinding when downshifting from 5-4th...not bad, but it happened twice, at low RPM...
Original clutch... could this be a sign of a clutch problem? Car has not been driven hard, raced, etc. I hesitate to buy the car because of this, unless the price is really really right. Owner denies the problem, says it never happened to him. I admit, it was at low RPM, I was just going thru the gears to see what they were like.

syncros are going bad or the clutch is not going into neutral all the way when its pushed in~ self adjust the clutch to see if its an issue with the clutch cable not being pulled enough when you push the petal in.

The stock setup you need to hold the clutch to the floor with one hand use the other hand on the quadrant (near the gas petal) and hold against the motion as you ease out the clutch petal and it will click (hold the quadrant half moon shaped plastic thing with a little gear on the end of it where the clutch cable goes over the quadrant as well) do a couple clicks see how that feels.

Mine did that from second to third but I changed out the fluid to amsoil and ran it half a quart low and it seemed to fix the problem. However if it's the original clutch this is around the mileage that they fail at

i had the same problem shifting from first to second. it was so horrible i thought i was gonna have to rebuild it. i drained the fluid when i installed a steeda triax shortthrow shifter and filled it with royal purple. i havent grinded second gear or any other gears since. RP works like magic!

I'm thinking its a combination of transmission design and synchro wear..

On my 01 GT, for some odd reason, if I put the car in 4th to 5th at low speed, then decide it's too high a gear for the speed before letting the clutch out and putting the shifter back to 4th I get a grind as well, it does not happen going from any other gear, and again only happens if I don't let the clutch out

I don't let it bother me, it doesn't affect drivability of the car at all, and I know my clutch is good

Re: Grinding when shifting--what is it

they say the 5th gear syncro is the weakest, but it might just be the gear itself is the weakest since its the smallest. NEVER power shift (or shift hard) into 5th or any overdrive gear.

How much is it to fix a syncros, looking into buying a 95 v6 that needs a new syncros
