Wierd Noise

Hello All,
I have a 2004 GT, pretty much stock. After the car has set for an extended period of time, (it usually does it when I pull out from work) I hear a sound that is similar to brakes squealing, but much deeper in tone. It is coming from the rear portion of the car, and just does it when I first go into motion. By the time I get up to 10 mph it has quit and the sound does not reappear. After that just the regular first gear auto tranny whine. Anyone had this happen to them?

Re: Wierd Noise

check the chunk and see if you are low on fluid in the rear end. Is it leaking at all?

And btw SpectorV, nice ride! If you don't mind me asking, what size rims are you running there and do you have any problems with the rears as far as clearance?

i had a sound just like that. come to find out it was my rotors. they ended up getting rust spots on the backside of the rotors and rubbing against my pads unevenly. i only heard at a very low speed. i got my rotors resurfaced and then noticed that my rear calipers were seized and replaced calipers, rotors, and pads.

hope that helps you

That's what I was thinking. Do you set your ebrake when you park it?

You installed new pads as well huh? If so they are probably just dragging the rotors a little after you let off the ebrake. No big deal then, while you're driving just engage the ebrake a little bit and wear the new pads down some. Should take care of the noise.

i had to get new pads because the seized caliper worn the pad down to the metal so it was really the pad metal rubbing against the rusty rotor

That's probably what's going on then. Just wear em down a little and hopefully your noise goes away. You could also try this. Instead of using the ebrake next time you park it all day, if You park on a pretty level surface, just park it in gear. Then when you drive it again see if it makes the noise again. If it doesn't, then you found your problem. But like I said, if that is what it is then it should go away after your new pads wear in a bit. Hope this helps.

Re: Wierd Noise

I have a funny rattle worse when its cold and only when i just start to accelerate at a given rpm under low load~ I thought it was detonation but I dont think so anymore. I need to get under there and see if it might be a cat or something hitting something~ etc its an odd one.

My 84 had an issue with the exhaust rattling a little too. Frustrated the hell out of me because I could never really pinpoint where it was coming from. Hope the new owner has fun with that. If he even notices. I'm pretty anal about noises myself.
