My clutch peddle in my 97 Gt is starting to cladder and it polsates up and down. Only happens in gear driving.Does any body know why this is happening.

is the clutch floppy or tight as you start to push it in? I assume floppy.

It could be the throwout bearing, does it make a chirp noise that goes away when you push it in?

Re: Clutch pedal is polesaiting when I drive.

Inside car it works fine. Does not chirp. I can hear the throw out bearing wineing at high speeds.I push in on the clucth and it goes away. When I drive around in 1,2,3 gear and let off the gas its starts to cladder and when i drive in 3,4 gear doing speed limit i can put my foot on the peddle lightly and i can fill it polesaiting. In fifth gear doing 60 and up it sounds like a slit turbo sound. I push in clucth and it goes away.

yea time for a new clutch as you might as well replace it if you are pulling the trans out.

inspect the clutch fork and anything else you will reuse, resurface the flywheel

replace pilot bearing, throwout bearing (use OEM ford no cheap one that comes with the clutch), pressure plate, clutch disk, inspect inputshaft for play (must be in tolerance) and inspect the sleeve the throwout bearing slide on if any signs of wear replace

also replace trans fluid while your at it

^^Yup I couldn't of said it better! If the clutch is as old as the car is it's time.

Re: Clutch pedal is polesaiting when I drive.

Is it still safe to drive until I have a chance to change it?

it should be ok, if the throwout bearing decides to break... you wont be able to put the car in neutral.

Spector is right and if it goes and you have you're foot into it you may need to fix more than just the bearing. I had that same problem and even if it was out of gear it would pulsate. Between 1000-2000 rpm was the worst. Sounded like it was pounding but when I installed the new clutch which I did myself courtesy of a sticky in modded mustangs and replaced the pilot bearing and throwout bearing it went away....

yea, I went through 3 throwout bearings in like a year... Ford did the work under warranty and they all died very quickly (one within a week)

Ouch. Was it defective equipment or what. That sounds very odd
