When to change plugs on 99 cobra?

I have about 120,000 on my 99 cobra and it seems to run perfect still. Is it time to change the plugs out and how hard or easy is it to do? Should i stick with factory motorcraft plugs?

The normal interval to change plugs is usually around 100,000mi. They are not really very hard to change. I would go with NGK spark plugs.

I'd use standard Motorcraft plugs. No need to go fancy on a stock car.

Re: When to change plugs on 99 cobra?

went with the motorcraft plugs, but each plug tube was filled with oil! some over the plug, some about half the plug. I used a screwdriver to push a rag into it to soak up what i could before removing them, but obviously some got into the motor. i started it after each plug to burn out the oil, then when done, it smoked for about a 1/2 mile then was fine, went on freeway, etc. let idle at home, restarted, no smoke from oil. what is the cause, do i need my valve cover gaskets redone or is it something else?

95% chance it's valve cover gaskets, as you'd suggested

I'd recommend taking care of it before you start dealing with misfire conditions..

Re: When to change plugs on 99 cobra?

yea around 100k is a good time to change. How a car runs slowly degrades over time and just because it sounds fine and seems fine does not mean there is not power or fuel eff. left on the table.

At your mileage you should change/inspect plugs (label them as you take them out so you know which went where) then take to a friend that KNOWS plus to inspect to make sure all is well look for tell tell signs of any bad things.

Inspect belt(s) and replace if worn/cracked/etc

Might be a great idea to so a full seafoam treatment (cleans carbon out of the engine etc) seafoam is the product name.

fual filter (EVERY 10-15k change this!!!!)

trans fluid (easy change even though its a manual is needs it every 25-35k if for nothing else to remove any metal shavings from missed gears/wear and tear)

PCV system check, replace valve to lower blow by

I know on my 03 the threads in the head that hold the spark plug in are only 4 deep.... you best be VERY careful here in removing and installing. They say its best to do when the car is cold. Use the right tq specs (on an in/lb wrench) to snug em in to be safe.

I would use a VERY VERY TINY bit of anti seize on the threads.

Re: When to change plugs on 99 cobra?

the spark plug tube seals are bad , these come in a valve cover gasket set , the drivers side is a little tuff to do( because of the master cyl ) but the pass side's a breeze !!!

oh ya , don't ever wait 100,000 miles to change your spark plugs , thats just insane !!!
I'm a tech and I don't care what the manufacture recommends , and go every 50,000 ,you;ll get better performance and gas mileage ....
